If you’ve been reading my blog for the last few weeks (original story here), you’ll know that I’ve been participating in a Biggest Loser contest at my gym. Well… I WON! I’m floating on air with excitement. I didn’t really think I had much of a chance, but I did it! I actually did it!
Honestly, I was in a tough situation… here I am a food blogger who prepares delicious food every day, and I’m trying to win a contest where I have to limit myself from eating that delicious food. It’s an amazingly difficult spot to be in. It required huge willpower and the willingness to cook more healthfully. It required being honest with my readers about my daily struggle. And it required a dedication that I wasn’t sure I had. Somehow I mustered up the courage to participate (and managed to do very well).
Here are the details-
*31 people participated (7 men and 24 women)
*We were measured at the beginning and the end, but we were weighed weekly.
*We met each Saturday for weigh-in & a special Boot Camp workout to do as a group.
*We had a handful of trainers who cheered us on and encouraged us to participate in exercise classes. Each week they gave us a workout guideline to follow (getting a little more intense as the weeks passed).
My results in five weeks:
*I lost a total of 11 pounds (6% of my body weight).
*I lost a total of 7 inches (chest + abs + waist).
*I was the winner of the women… there was a winner for the men too (he lost 8%).
What this means?
I feel great. I really do! I have loads more energy, and I’m happy. I’m fitting into clothes that haven’t seen the light of day in a couple of years, and that makes me even happier :) The contest isn’t over for me at all. I plan to continue eating healthfully and exercising (as do many of the other contestants). There’s quite a bit more I’d like to lose. Our trainers will have a special workout for us once a month and weigh us in to keep the momentum going.
I’ve always been so inspired by watching the progress of the contestants on The Biggest Loser TV show, and I know there are so many copycat contests popping up at gyms, in offices and among friends. If any of you are considering taking part in one of these, I suggest you give it a try. It’s wonderful to be a part of a group (there are 31 of us) who are all working toward the same goal. I met some really great new friends, and it made the agony of exercising and attempting to lose weight more bearable. We cheered each other on every step of the way… and in the end the result was so satisfying for us all- not everybody lost a lot of weight, but we all lost inches, and there were quite a few noticeable body changes for most of the contestants.

It has really helped to blog about the experience and get feedback from you. I’ll keep blogging about my experience but instead of a weekly progress, I’ll be transitioning to a monthly weight loss progress update.
