Cinnamon Buns
2 pkgs. or 2 tbsp dry yeast
½ cup warm water (105-115 degrees)
1¼ cup buttermilk
2 eggs
5½ -6 cups flour
½ cup butter, softened
½ cup sugar
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp salt
1 stick butter, very soft or melted
cinnamon/ sugar (combine ½ cup sugar with ¼-1/2 cup cinnamon)
Frosting
4 cups confectioner’s sugar
1 stick butter, softened
1 tsp vanilla
2-3 tbsp milk
Cream sugar and butter. Stir in milk and vanilla. Beat until smooth and light.
In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let sit until yeast bubbles and is frothy. Add buttermilk, eggs, 2 ½ cups flour, butter, sugar, baking powder and salt. Stir until combined. Add more flour and mix until dough is easy to handle. Dough should be soft and slightly sticky.
Place dough into large greased bowl and flip dough over. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in warm area until double.
Turn dough out and divide in half.
Working with the first half, roll dough on floured surface into a rectangle about 10×15 inches. Spread softened or melted butter over dough. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture over dough. Roll up dough into log. Cut into 12 even buns. Place into well greased muffin tins or in greased 9x 13 inch pan. Repeat with remaining dough. Let rise until double. Bake in pre-heated 350 degree oven for 15-20 min. Brush with melted butter while still hot from oven. When cool, can be frosted.

My mom’s side of the family is Mexican, so every Christmas we read the children’s story “Too Many Tamales” and spend an entire day making hundreds of tamales! All of my aunts and cousins join in to make the day happen. Then, each family eats their share of tamales Christmas morning for breakfast
It is a family recipe (no one actually has the recipe right now except one of my aunts) and a tradition that will continue for years to come!

It has been 10 years since my mother passed, so every Christmas since my sister and I try to make some of the same recipes that we all used to make together. Our favorite was Cranberry Jello Salad.
1 bag of cranberries, 2 apples in food processor, combined with 2 small cherry jello, nuts, crushed pineapple and small marshmallows, place in a 9 x 13 pan and refrigerate.
Kim — December 20, 2010 @ 6:28 AM

My two kids are now in their 20′s and I have to honestly say that I can’t remember too many things that we made together. Their dad and I were divorced when they were fairly young, so time was split between the two households and I was too much of a control freak to let them mess up the kitchen. Sad, sad, sad. I’m looking forward to the day I can let my grandbabies mess up my kitchen and really get to some serious cooking. No little babies in sight right now, but something to look forward to. Thanks.

Around this time of year my family and I LOVE to make Pumpkin Bread. It is so yummy, I can’t help not to share…
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 cup olive oil (yes, olive oil!)
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon allspice
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
Preheat oven to 350°F. Sift together the flour, salt, sugar, and baking soda.
Mix the pumpkin, oil, eggs, 1/4 cup of water, and spices together, then combine with the dry ingredients, but do not mix too thoroughly. Stir in the nuts.
Pour into a well-buttered 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake 50-60 minutes until a thin skewer poked in the very center of the loaf comes out clean. Turn out of the pan and let cool on a rack. Makes one loaf, but you can easily double the recipe!

Our favorite recipe is Chewy Noels. I’ve been making them with my family literally since I was 10, going on 17 years now. They’re super easy and so tasty!
Ingredients
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped walnuts
1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar for dusting
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Melt the butter in a 7×11 inch baking dish, and tilt the pan to coat all of the sides; set aside.
In a medium bowl, stir together the brown sugar, flour, and baking soda. Mix in the eggs and vanilla until smooth, then stir in the walnuts. Pour over the melted butter.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the edges begin to brown. Cool, then cut into squares, and dust with confectioners sugar.

Making this fudge has been a Christmas tradition since I was just a little girl:
Ingredients:
4 1/2 cups sugar
1 can Carnation milk
3 6 oz. bags of semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 lb. butter
1 jar marshmallow cream
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Dash of salt
1 – 2 cups of walnuts (optional)
Instructions:
1. Boil sugar and milk for 10 minutes, stirring constantly.
2. Remove from heat and add the remaining ingredients.
3. Mix well and spread on a large cookie sheet.
This fudge freezes well. Thaw out shortly before serving. Makes 5 lbs. of fudge.

We love to make roll out cookies. First we spend a Saturday making the dough for: Chai Spice Cookies (made with chai tea), Mexican Chocolate Cookies (with cayenne & black pepper), Sugar Cookies & Lemon Poppy Seed to name some of the recipes. Then on Sunday we roll them out, choose our favorite cookie cutters and bake away. The house usually smells amazing…and then we wrap them up and give them away…nibble here, nibble there.
Here’s one of the recipes…
Lemon Poppy Seed Cookies
Makes: about 36 cookies
Prep: 20 minutes
Chill: 2 hours or overnight
Bake: at 350 degrees F for 13 minutes
Ingredients
* 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 teaspoon baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
* 2/3 cup sugar
* 1 egg
* 2 teaspoons lemon zest
* 2 tablespoons lemon juice
* 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
Directions
1. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt; set aside.
2. Beat butter and sugar on medium-high speed for 2 minutes or until smooth. Beat in egg, zest and juice until fluffy, 1 minute. Gradually beat in flour mixture on low, just until blended. Add poppy seeds; stir to combine. Divide dough in half. Flatten each into 6-inch square; wrap in plastic. Refrigerate 2 hours or overnight. Let stand at room temperature 15 minutes before rolling out dough.
3. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat 2 baking sheets with nonstick cooking spray. Lightly flour dough. Roll half of dough on lightly floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. For variety, use 2 cutters, one about 2 inches and the other 2-1/2 inches. Reroll scraps and repeat. Place cookies, 1 inch apart, on baking sheet. Repeat with other half of dough.
4. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10 to 13 minutes or until golden around edges. Remove to rack to cool completely.

My daughter and i love to make our holiday treats together. We just had our first annual ugly sweater cookie swap. We awarded trophies, 1st, 2nd & 3rd, for good, better & best cookie and also ugly, uglier & ugliest sweater! There were about thirty people in attendance plus about ten kids of different ages. We had an actual bowling alley set up for them and a huge pin the nose on rudolph game! Not only was it great family fun, but the participants now have a great selection of cookies and treats to share with visitors in their home through the holidays with no more baking!
We are a military family and will be sharing our new tradition at each new duty station!
Merry Christmas everyone and God bless!

Every year my family and I will get together the night before Christmas eve and do a baking party and start working on the menu for Christmas dinner. The one unique thing we always enjoy preparing and taking as a side dish to Christmas dinner has been the Cranberry Salad dish. It’s a truly simple dish and I love sharing the recipe with people because of how delicious it is, even for those who aren’t big cranberry fans!
Ingredients:
• 1 pint heavy whipping cream
• 1 large can of diced or chopped pineapple, drained
• 1 lbs. fresh cranberries
• 2 cups of sugar
• ½ lbs. mini marshmallows, white or color (your choice)
• 1 bag of chopped walnuts, optional
Instructions:
1. Dice or ground up the 1 lbs. of cranberries into tiny little pieces.
2. Crush the walnuts until they’re of the size you desire
3. In a medium bowl mix together the diced/ground cranberries, walnuts, pineapple and sugar.
4. Cover bowl with saran wrap and allow to chill in the fridge for 8+ hours (or over night)
5. Once done chilling, in another medium bowl whip whipping cream until it’s light and fluffy like whipped cream then combine marshmallows
6. When ready to serve, fold marshmallow/whipping cream mixture into cranberry mixture.

Mom and Grandma used to cook up a storm for the holidays. Besides fudge, divinity, and a wide array of other sweets, the ravioli, turkey, and…. well. I am so thankful I was able to learn from such a pro. When I started work at the Culinary Institute in California I was amazed to see the techniques they used were the same as Mom’s. Here is an easy Biscotti Recipe:
2 c flour
1 c sugar
pinch of salt
1 tsp Anise seed
3-4 large eggs room temp
1/2 c Hazelnuts toasted
1/2 c Almonds toasted
1 tsp baking powder
mix all dry ingredients except nuts.
add eggs and mix until dough forms
add nuts.
Have Fun!

My kids like to help make Shrimp Dip.
You take 1 package of Cream Cheese and smear it in the bottom of a round glass Pie Pan. THen you spread a layer of Cocktail sauce over the cream cheese. Then you put 1 layer of tiny shrimp and lay it on the Cocktail sauce. Take Ritz Crackers, scoop up the dip and enjoy. My kids can make it and I eat it.

I love my family and my family loves bread. We’re southerners, so we make biscuits–every. single. day.
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup cake flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
6 Tbsp butter
1 cup milk
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Sift dry ingredients in a bowl. Cut butter with your fingers, fork, or pastry cutter until the mixture looks like course crumbs. Pour in the milk and stir it with a fork until the ingredients are moistened. Lightly flour the counter or another work surface and turn out the dough. Pat into a circle between 1/2 and 3/4 inches thick. Cut biscuits into desired shapes. Rework scraps and cut them into shapes as well. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes.

I love making Christmas cookies with my family. My favorite cookies are the peanut butter with a Hershey kiss in the middle. For Christmas, we roll them in red and green sugar to make them festive looking. When I was a kid, my Grandma would have a Grandma’s day where all her grandkids would get together and make all the Christmas cookies. I hope my mom will do the same thing with my kids some day.

Christy Fike — December 20, 2010 @ 11:51 AM
Well, I’m not a mom yet…but I am a nanny and some of the kids I used to watch loved making a recipe a friend gave us called “yummy yum yum balls”. It’s basically natural peanut or almond butter mixed with rolled oats, honey, ground flax seed meal and chocolate chips. The kids loved pouring in all the ingredients and trying to show me how “strong” they were when it came time to mix it all together. And of course they love rolling the dough like mixture into balls (which you put in the freezer for a few hours). Then it’s yummy yum yum time!
Emily — December 20, 2010 @ 11:52 AM

My whole life, my mom and I have always had fun making candy together around Christmas time… she has all these amazing recipes in her head that I rarely see others make. In particular is her burnt sugar candy, which is just what it sounds like — caramelized sugar mixed with butter and evaporated milk and other ingredients that, in the end, has the consistency of fudge and tastes like nothing else I’ve ever tasted. So fun!

I love it when my mom pulls out the home made cookies. She does some phenomenal peanut butter oatmeal cookies. It’s not so much of a family baking session as it is me eating the raw cookie dough.
I’m not exactly in the market to win an iPad but I do think the contest is awesome. I just bought something that helps my iPad out, though. It’s the TabGrip and the cool thing is it has legs so you can stand your iPad up. It’s helpful in the kitchen when you pull up a recipe on your iPad and you want it close by.

We ALWAYS make the Cherry Cheese Braid using crescent rolls for Christmas breakfast. I thought the tradition would die when my youngest moved across country to med school but he actually called and asked if I would send the recipe this year so he could make it too. He and his room mates are going to make it since he won’t get home! Funny how the smallest things make such a big impression on your kids!

I love making pretzel cookies with my sons every year. They aren’t anything special, but they are delcious and so simple to make. My oldest son loves to count out the pretzels and unwrap the candy kisses, and my youngest son loves to watch them start to melt in the oven. My oldest son tries to race me putting the M&M’s on top to finish them. I love that it gets them in the kitchen with me, even if it is for only a few minutes.
Thanks for the opportunity to win this great gift! Happy Holidays!!

Chocolate Cookie Cheesecake
with oreo cookie crumbs, melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in your cheesecake…how can you go wrong?
daniel j — December 21, 2010 @ 11:30 AM
This is always a must-have at Christmas time:
* 2 cups sugar
* 1/2 cup milk
* 1/2 cup cocoa
* pinch salt
* 1/2 cup butter
* 1 cup peanut butter
* 1 tsp. vanilla
* 3 cups quick-cooking oatmeal
Preparation:
In large saucepan, combine sugar, milk, cocoa, salt, and butter and mix well. Bring to a boil and cover saucepan for 30 seconds to allow steam to wash sugar crystals down sides of pan. Stir mixture and bring it to a boil that can’t be stirred down for 1 minute. Then remove from heat and stir in peanut butter and vanilla until smooth. Add oatmeal and mix well. Do not use regular or instant oatmeal; quick-cooking oatmeal is essential to the success of this recipe.
Let the mixture stand for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to let the oatmeal absorb some of the liquid.
Drop mixture by spoonfuls onto waxed paper or parchment lined baking sheets or Silpat sheets. Let cool until you can touch the mixture; then reshape the cookies to make them more a ball shape. Let cool completely; store tightly covered at room temperature. You can also pour this mixture into a 9″ square pan that has been greased with unsalted butter, let cool, then cut into squares.

Now that my oldest child is 3 years old, I am really enjoying cooking and baking with the family. We love making “hot cheese puffs”. We get quite the assembly line going — from cutting out the circles in the bread to mixing/spreading and sprinkling. So fun — and a savory (and spicy) treat!

Every year we make “cheese cookies” which are really just, shredded cheese, butter and flour! They are DELICIOUS!
We also, from my childhood, have carried over the tradition of toasting almonds on Christmas Eve. We buy the almonds with their skins on, soak them in boiling water and then cold, pop the skins off (lots of fun for kids), split the almonds in half and spread them on a warm baking sheet with a bit of melted butter and salt. Put them in the oven at about 300 degrees and watch them until they are golden brown. Sprinkle with salt and mix with raisins when the almonds are cooled off! YUMMY handfulls of snacks for the holiday!

I like to make meatloaf. Its my son’s favorite. So, he’d getting to that age now (8) where he wants to know how to make his favorite meals. I have him smash the saltine crackers into small pieces into a big bowl, while I add the hamburger and egg. Then, he adds the water and ketchup and a packet of Lipton onion soup. It was something I did as a kid with my parents too… So, guess it only goes to figure that this has evolved into a long-standing family tradition/ritual. Hopefully my son will love to cook someday too, just as much as I do! LOL

I like to make “7 layer Bars” -a recipe my Grandma past down to me, and I now share with friends looking for a quick, easy dessert.
Take a 9×9 pan and melt 1/4 pound butter in it. Preheat oven to 375%
- Crumble 1 pkg. Graham crackers into the melted butter, and pat it down.
- spread a layer of chocolate (1 cup white and one cup dark), coconut ( 1 cup), walnuts (1 cup), and glaze heavily with sweetened condensed milk ( I can).
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or to desired golden browner topping…. Let cool and serve. Guests love this dessert, from my experience. ESP cut into small bars. Fun, tasty, and fast. Thank God for my Grandma, who first shared this treat!

Fav. recipe that my family love to make for Christmas is a recipe for Tamales that has been handed down in my husbands family for generations.
Joie Tamkin — December 22, 2010 @ 12:45 PM
I love sweet potatoes! and I love cooking them for my entire family for the holidays. The kids always think it’s a dessert! Cooking has never been easy for me, so following a good healthy recipe is key to my success in the kitchen.
Here is the Sweet Potatoes that anyone can make:
Bake 5 lbs of sweet potatoes (about 5 potatoes) for 20 minutes in the oven, until they are soft
Peel off the skin and cut them into cubes
Sprikle with the following
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
For an added bonus, and to get the kids to love them, you can cover the top with small marshmellows and bake the entire dish for 5-10 mins until the marshmellows look toasted. Kids love that.
Happy Holidays!!!

kamran siddiqi — December 23, 2010 @ 10:06 AM
My family and I are never in the kitchen when I am baking- that’s when I am in “the zone,” but when it comes to cooking- we’re always in the kitchen. Even my sister who doesn’t cook helps. We love making spaghetti and meatballs together. It’s somewhat brainless when all of us are huddled together in our small kitchen- chopping, sauteeing, and frying away. It’s absolutely wonderful.
Shanna — December 23, 2010 @ 10:07 AM
My mom’s peanut butter roll candy is a family event with the hand working of the dough to spreading the peanut butter to the rolling it all up and slicing. This is a big process and needs many hands.

Baked brie en croute, filled with fresh cranberry sauce and a sprinkle of mint is a very festive app. Kids can help with the filling and wrapping the brie.
Even better, you can cut away scrap puff pastry and have the kids use cookie cutters to cut their favorite shapes and put them on top of the wrapped brie. The final product will be golden brown and very pretty, and they’ll be able to help throughout the process!
One step further? Make mini baked bries en croute so everyone can get their own.
Natalie Vandenberghe — December 23, 2010 @ 10:12 AM
We like to make homemade potstickers together. We kind of set-up an assembly line. I cook the filling, then my kids stuff and fold the wrappers. It’s fun and the end result is delicious. I don’t know anything about apps–but, I’m sure that my kids will educate me if I win. Thanks for the giveaway.

*whew, try that again–
My favourite dish that we all make together is Eggs Benedict! It’s been my favourite since I was in 3rd grade (tough fav. for a third grader let me tell ya). Now that we live so far apart it’s usually around Christmas that we make it these days.
When I was younger, I was able to help with fetching things and punching down the bread. But this past time we were together, I was the one that was making the English Muffins, my Mum was making the Hollandaise, and my Pere was poaching the eggs. It’s something delicious we all have a part in, which is particularly fun.

I love making peanut butter pie with my granddaughter and great-grandaughter.
Papa’s Peanut Butter Pie
1 1/4 cup chocolate cookie crumbs
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter
8 ounces cream cheese
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon softened butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup heavy cream
DIRECTIONS
1. Mix crust together and place ingredients in a 9 inch pie plate and bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Let cool.
2. Beat together first 5 filling ingredients until smooth and well blended.
3. In a different clean bowl, beat the cream until stiff peaks form. Do not beat it so much that it makes butter! Fold into other ingredients. Put into cooled crust.
4. Refrigerate! Can garnish with chocolate curls for decoration.

PREHEAT oven to 375° F. Grease 15 x 10-inch jelly-roll pan; line with wax paper. Grease and flour paper. Sprinkle a thin, cotton kitchen towel with powdered sugar.
COMBINE flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt in small bowl. Beat eggs and granulated sugar in large mixer bowl until thick. Beat in pumpkin. Stir in flour mixture. Spread evenly into prepared pan. Sprinkle with nuts.
BAKE for 13 to 15 minutes or until top of cake springs back when touched. (If using a dark-colored pan, begin checking for doneness at 11 minutes.) Immediately loosen and turn cake onto prepared towel. Carefully peel off paper. Roll up cake and towel together, starting with narrow end. Cool on wire rack.
FOR FILLING:
BEAT cream cheese, 1 cup powdered sugar, butter and vanilla extract in small mixer bowl until smooth. Carefully unroll cake. Spread cream cheese mixture over cake. Reroll cake. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least one hour. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
COOKING TIP:
Be sure to put enough powdered sugar on the towel when rolling up the cake so it will not stick.
