How to Make Iced Coffee

I’m not much of a coffee drinker. No sirree. No caffeine needed. My body is hard-wired to have an abundance of natural energy from the moment I wake up. I guess I’m lucky that way. I do love the flavor of coffee though… coffee candies and coffee ice cream and even those foo foo frozen coffee drinks that contain your total allotted calorie consumption in just a dozen sips.

That’s why on one rather sweltering afternoon recently, I grabbed my husband’s mug o’ coffee that had been sitting untouched on the counter all day long, and I made myself a rather delicious version of Iced Coffee. Here’s how to make it:

You’ll need a tall glass and a spoon long enough to reach the bottom of that glass.

Fill that glass full to the rim with ice. If you really want to get serious about your iced coffee, you can make ice cubes out of coffee too. Then you won’t get that “watered-down” effect.  And if you’re into that flavored sort of coffee then go for it.

Pour room temperature (or chilled) coffee into the glass.

Fill it almost to the top.

Pour in the white stuff. Here’s where you get to make a big decision. Do you want to go all out and make this a decadent treat? If so, then add cream or half & half. If you want to go a little lighter, use whole milk or fat-free half & half. And lighter still, use nonfat milk.

Take a moment to watch the swirls sink to the bottom and mix in with the coffee. It’s a magical moment. :)

Add a couple spoonfuls of sugar (if you like sweet)… or whatever sort of sweetener you usually add to your coffee.

Stir it all up!

Anticipate drinking your creation.

Add a purple straw. If you’re a straw person, that is. And drink up!

Here’s the cool part (at least I think this is kind of cool…). You’ve seen these flavored coffee creamers, right? You can always use this stuff in your iced coffee. It’ll cover both your cream and your sweetener. And if you get this particular brand… then you’ll be getting a coffee creamer with a photograph that yours-truly took! Yep, those cupcakes that you see right there– those are my White Wedding Cake Cupcakes that I posted on the site a couple of years ago.

I made those cupcakes with the pearls on top for a teacher’s wedding from my son’s school. This company liked my photo and wanted to use it for the label on their new product, so they bought it from me!  Isn’t that fun?! You should be able to find this product and this new flavor- Sweet Cream- in your local market (and they definitely did not pay me to say that!!)

Enjoy your iced coffee, however you decide to make it :)

Iced Coffee

Yield: 1 coffee drink (easy to multiply)

Prep Time: 5 min

On a hot day, this is your ticket to cooling off...

Ingredients:

1 cup of ice
1 cup coffee, at room temperature (or chilled)
2 Tablespoons cream, milk, or half and half
1 to 2 teaspoons granulated white sugar

Directions:

1. Fill a glass with ice. Pour in coffee. Add cream and sugar. Stir and drink!

2. See tips below for variations :)

Tips:

*Lighten things up in this drink by using nonfat milk... or fat-free half & half. Use your desired low/no calorie sweetener in place of sugar.

*Another option is to add a flavored creamer, which will cover both the cream and the sugar.

    I love iced coffee and make it with farm fresh raw cream and a touch of stevia for sweetness. I’m not a fan of the coffemate type creams because they are highly processed.

    About a month ago I started cold brewing iced coffee (I just grind the beans and mix with cold water and leave, covered, in the frige overnight, then strain in the morning). I’ve been making about 10 cups worth, and it’s concentrated, so it lasts me a couple of weeks per batch. I keep it in the giant mason jar drink dispenser (with spigot) that Pottery Barn has right now. It is a life saver on rushed mornings, and is totally delicious! Recommended.

    Your cupcakes are beautiful, and it’s the coolest thing ever that you can see them in the grocery store!!!

    What is even better is if you cold brew coffee from the start: ground it coarse, add it to a container, add cold water, put in fridge for 8-12 hrs. Take it out and strain out the grounds, then strain the coffee again thru a fine cloth and put back into container and into fridge again. This method is less acidic and will last for about 2 wks and taste great every time! Coffee to water ratio: 1lb coffee to 1 gal water. You can also get a Toddy maker and make it that way. My description is the same process and a lot cheaper. Good luck and enjoy!

    I made my first iced coffee this past weekend because I was sanding and painting a wooden bench in 98 degree weather outside. Why I did that, I have no idea! I just wanted to get it done!
    I did not like the watered down effect with the ice cubes. Good idea on freezing leftover coffee and use that. Thanks for that tip!

    Iced coffee is the only way I can drink coffee. Making ice cubes out of coffee is a good idea, because my problem is that it gets watered down. If I think in advance, though, I can make a pot of coffee and keep it in the fridge overnight so in the morning I can pour and go.

    I love iced coffee! My favorite way to make it is to add a little vanilla soy milk in addition to sweetener. Yum! I also use the cold brew method and have found a French press coffee maker works well and makes the straining part much easier.

    I love iced coffee! I prefer it to hot coffee, especially in the summer. However, I always add sugar to it when it’s still hot so that it dissolves better. I also like to brew it stronger so that it doesn’t get watered down when the ice melts. The coffee ice cubes are a great idea! I recently discovered your website and I am already in love with it!!     I make Iced Coffee by taking a tall glass, adding instant coffee & hot water 1/4 the way. Then spring water another 1/4 the way, lots of cubes,sugar & milk. Always tastes great.

    So, I was reading the Top Ten Recipes of 2011 and saw this. Being the total coffee snob that I am, I had to comment. :)

    I’m no chef, and this is strictly a humble opinion, but I think the key to iced coffee is that the coffee must be brewed very smoothly and very, very strong. A bitter or acidic taste will amplify in the cold, and the ice really waters down the coffee flavor of a normal brew.

    I love the cold brew method. Keurig also makes a K-cup just for iced coffee. Both are really, really yummy!

    Ok, stepping off my snobby soapbox here. This was just on my mind since it’s 80 degrees on New Year’s Eve in So Cal, and I’m going to enjoy a glass today!

    Thank you madam for those wonderful words and mouth watering snapshots. But i think addition of sugar must be done to coffee once it is hot. Sugar won’t dissolve properly in cold liquids. So granules may come up as we drink it.

    I didn’t find that the sugar had trouble dissolving. Just give it a vigorous stir and all is good- though you can certainly add it to the hot coffee if you prefer.

    Between my work in the field of Emergency Services and my Photography I run a delicate balance BCC (Blood Caffeine Content) as opposed to BAC for those who have ever had to take a Blood-Alcohol Breathalyzer…LOL! So easy to just pick up an Iced-Coffee to go, but even nicer to be refreshed on the process in the comfort of my own kitchen!!

    In consummate Bachelor style I take it one step further in the preparation process…I brew a Fresh Pot whenever the need arises and have my Hot Coffee as my infusion of Caffeine and Warmth as my first cup and pour the remainder into a great glass carafe I picked up and always have that in the fridge with pre-chilled, ready to pour and add decadence!

    Wish I had one of your cupcakes to go with it though!

    Was looking for Iced coffee recipe for my wife and found yours and I will be trying it soon looks good.I than seen your cup cake recipe and while looking at it seen that you mentioned that a company had reduced the size of the portions in the cake mix so you recommended using another brand “Good for you” I lobbied against the “no price tag law” in Michigan because I remembered my Mom sending letters to the Governor protesting that the super markets were cheating homemakers out of money a penny at a time and in my home the only money my Mom had was the money she saved on the grocery bill.I don’t think it any less important to a homemaker today than it was 50 years ago, unfortunately the Bill past in Michigan and the prices have been creeping up every sense and at the same time the quantities have been going down. So good for you and all the homemakers in America that don’t take this laying down. I’m going to make that Iced Coffee now and I know it’s going to taste so good in the 90 degree heat today.

    Thanks- the bummer is that I heard recently that ALL of the boxed mixes on the market (all brands) will soon go to that reduced size. They claim that it won’t affect the size of the cakes/cupcakes but I don’t see how that’s possible.

    I want to thank you, Lori, for the great tip for using coffee to make ice cubes! I recently treid to brew iced coffee with my single cup coffee maker and it was sooooooooo watery! I like strong coffee, so I think this will work wonders! I have a pot brewing (using my old 12 cup maker for this….glad I saved it when I got the Keurig!) right now to make my cubes with and then put the rest in the fridge. I can’t wait! I normally use SO Delicious brand coconut milk coffee creamer and NO sweetener in my coffee, but I think I would like a little sweetness in the iced version. Thanks to your tip, I now have a great base iced coffee that I can experiment with! Thanks again!!!!!!!

    I tried some premade iced coffe by a company called “emmi” i bought at tesco express and i just wondered about all the times i BOTHERED with hot coffee, iced coffee is a dream in a cup! AWESOME and i’m very grateful for your tutorial as my drink was 1.35 for 230ml which is hugely expensive to me, i see regular 4 pint milk go for about the same, i definitely won’t be using the kettle any more ;D it was quite a revelation for me, ice coffee is so much more luxurious, i’m converted! ;D

    For the milk a good idea is coconut milk, the one from the carton! It adds a slight twinge and is really nice and light

    Yum! The only thing I do differently is that I make up a batch of simple syrup to keep in a mason jar in my fridge and use this rather than sugar crystals to sweeten my iced coffee- because the sugar is already dissolved you don’t need to stir much, and you do not end up with undissolved sugar crystals stuck to your ice cubes. Simple syrup is just a 2:1 ration of sugar: water, boiled until sugar is dissolved then cooled. As a bonus, I can also use this simle syrup to make a mojito :)

    I make my iced coffee with a bodum kenya french press and i have never looked back, i havnt worked out my costs per cup but i guess it’s less than half the 1.30 price for starbucks can or emmi at. 200ml, i get about 300ml and mine taste even better as i use 4.19 cornwall clotted ice cream 1L it has become a major passion of mine, i want to buy a machine that does ice coffe as brewing is messy, fiddly and time consuming, i am so converted from hot coffee though i barely drink that anymore.. Iced coffee is natural progression for me

    Not trying to be a hater or anything but I noticed your picture of wedding cakes displays one white cake, whereas the creamer company’s photo displays two brown cakes, just an observation ^.~

    They purchased the photo and then did what they wanted with it… duplicated it, colorized it, whatever! I don’t think that flavor is around anymore, unfortunately. Enjoy!

    I love ice coffee and this looks like a great recipe!! The only change I’d make is soft brown sugar instead of white or sweetners- it gives a great sorta caramel flavor and complements the coffee! Happy new year and bottoms up :)
