How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte

I’m excited about my recipes this week.  That doesn’t really tell you all that much since I’m  excited about new recipes every week… but this week I’m particularly excited.  Why is that, you ask? Well,  I loved this week’s recipes.  My husband loved this week’s recipes.  My son loved this week’s recipes.  I hope you love them too.  Today I’m going to show you  How to Make Your Very Own Pumpkin Spice Latte, in the comfort of your own home… without waiting in long lines or shelling out a gazillion pennies.   We’re going to make a “tall” latte, as they say in the coffee world.  You’ll be able to get two regular coffee-cup sized lattes out of this method if you’re willing to share the goods with someone else.

I love Instagram.  I shared this photo the other day on Instagram after making this latte and messing with my Camera + App.  You can do the coolest things with photos on your iPhone.

Anyway, here’s how you make this…

Brew your favorite cup of coffee in your cutest coffee cup.  Strong, if you want a strong coffee flavor in your latte.  We use a single brewer Keurig since we don’t go through pots of coffee at our house.  I just found out recently that you can get one of those K-Cup things if you like to brew with your favorite grounds.

Add pumpkin puree to a half cup of milk.  I used whole milk since I love that rich flavor.  If I were on a diet, like I should be, I’d use nonfat milk.

Add brown sugar…

…and vanilla extract…

…and pumpkin pie spice.  Did you know you can make your own pumpkin pie spice?  See the tips in my recipe below…

Whisk all that good stuff together.

And then put it in the microwave.

One or two minutes later, and your pumpkin milk mixture is hot and frothy and ready for latte – ing.

Pour all of that pumpkin milk into a tallish mug or glass.

Pour your hot cup of coffee in next.

Add a little half & half.

Add a teaspoon of sugar…

…and stir and taste.  Add more sugar if you’d like it sweeter.

Add a little bit of whipped cream (optional, but not really).

Okay, add a lot of whipped cream (it’s better that way).

Sprinkle nutmeg on top.

How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte at Home

And there you go!  No lines, no weird syrups, and perfectly delicious for a chilly fall morning.  See why I was so excited?  Love.

Yield: 1 drink

Prep Time: 10 min

Cook Time: 4 min

Pumpkin Spice Latte

Do It Yourself version of Starbuck's delicious Pumpkin Spice Latte...

Ingredients:

1/2 cup whole milk

1 tablespoon unsweetened canned pumpkin puree
1 teaspoon packed light brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup hot brewed, strong coffee
2 tablespoons half & half cream
1 teaspoon granulated white sugar, or more to taste
whipped cream, optional
ground nutmeg

Directions:

1. In a glass measuring cup or microwave-safe bowl, whisk together milk, pumpkin, brown sugar, spice and vanilla. Microwave for 1 to 2 minutes- watch closely and remove it from the microwave when the milk is hot and frothy.

2. Pour the pumpkin milk into a tall mug or glass. Add hot coffee. Pour in the cream. Add a teaspoon of sugar. Stir, and taste. Add more sugar, if desired.

3. Optional, but oh so good... add whipped cream on top and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Serve immediately!

Tips:

*Feel free to lighten up the recipe by using nonfat milk and fat-free half & half. It won't be as rich, but it will still give you that yummy pumpkin latte flavor.

*If you don't have pumpkin pie spice in your collection of spices, make your own! Mix equal parts of cinnamon, ginger, allspice and nutmeg- and measure from there.

    I have got to try this recipe! I made a blog post talking about how awesome this recipe is. I love pumpkins, cinnamon, whipped cream, coffee, fall, saving $$$ (lol! whole point of whipping up a dupe of starbucks’ pumpkin spice latte right?) I so want to try this, I have a can of pumpkin ready for all the latte’s I’m fixing to make this fall season! 😀

    I havent tried this yet.. I see in the grocery store there is a canned pumpkin PIE mix that already has sugar and spices… do you think I could get that and add to the milk and forgo having to add pumpkin pie spice and sugar in the coffee? Just a thought..? Trying to simplify as much as possible…

    This is an amazing recipe. I had bought my first pumpkin latte of the seasrday and was majorly disappointed.it didn’t taste like pumpkin at all. So I found this recipe this afternoon and had to try it right away.I love it. It tastes just like pumpkin pie. I will defiantly use it year round as I always hated waiting for fall.thankyou!

    Saw this recipe and had to make it right away!!! I love pumpkin in everything so I was excited about this, only change I would make is to make my coffee stronger and using 1/2 tbs more of the pumpkin!

    THANK YOU! This is a great recipe! For a lactose-free version, I used coconut milk in the place of milk & coconut milk coffee creamer in the place of half n half and it still ROCKS!!! You have no Idea how much money this will save me now that I won’t be going to my favorite (name brand) latte shop as much. ;o) Awesome Recipe,

    Oh Yum! Thank you for your recipes-you haven’t failed me yet!
    Made this using Pumpkin Butter* (from Trader Joe’s), heated everything on the stove, then used immersion blender to froth it. I used strong coffee, but next time will try Espresso. I think that would be much better!
    *Have also purchased Pumpkin Butter at a local apple orchard/cider mill.

    An easy way to make pumpkin purée is to blend it and liquefy pumpkin first and then boil in a saucepan with a tablespoon of sugar only,so this way it caramelises and turns deep orange. Keep boiling until you get a rich terracotta color and if its thickened. It’s optional to add corn flour for thickening only incrementally so it doesn’t clump.
    Keep boiling until you feel the desired consistency is desired.

    Spice it up, u can go to a local Indian store and buy tea spice powder or known as tea/chai masala along with the pumpkin spice. If you want a fiery stimulation feel free to add a pinch of chilli powder into the milk mixture……..just before heating…..garnishing: scrape a few thin barks of cinnamon ….the quill ……into tiny shavings with choc powder sprinkle.
    For a creamy edge add a teaspoon of pumpkin spice cream cheese into the milk…..it will melt n give a real rich taste,,……as for pumpkin purée bake pumpkin for 45 min at 350 F n then blend or boil with the spices and store.

    i notice that you mentioned you should use non-fat milk and something about a diet. so i assume the diet is to loose weight. have you not heard (on the dr. oz show at the very least) that the kind of fat in the cream (dr. oz calls it c.l.a. or congugated linoleic acid) that help significantly with weight loss. in addition wikepedia says “few anticarcinogens, and certainly no other known fatty acids, are as effective as CLA in inhibiting carcinogenesis in these models. Although CLA is known for its anticancer properties, researchers have also found that another form of CLA can reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease and help fight inflammation.” i read another study that showed people who consume full fat milk have less breast or prostate cancer than those who consume non fat. don’t overdo it, but be sure you get some of that CLA, now. go full fat on the dairy. (As long as it is Organic so you don’t get that old growth hormone that causes cancer. AND if you can, get the cream top, or non homogenized so you keep your arteries healthier. and even better, if you trust nature, get it raw.

    Love this!
    I’m sending this over to a friend who cannot have the sbux PSLs because the syrup has dairy in it, and she’s dairy-free. However, this recipe can easily be made by switching out coconut cream with the milk products. Plus, pumpkin and coconut can be good friends in a coffee mug =0)

    So I tried this recipe, and it didn’t seem too pumpkiney – there was definite pumpkin flavor, but not enough for me. What do you recommend for making it more pumpkiney?

      Not sure! You’ll have to mess around w/ the ingredients until it tastes like what you’re looking for.

    I finally got this where I like it. I do raw organic honey from Costco instead of brown sugar and regular sugar. Also I use Espresso instead of coffee and cut the vanilla to 1/2 tsp. I know everyone’s taste is different but for me this is perfection! Thanks for the recipe!
