Turkey Sloppy Joe Sliders
Thank you for all of the support and congratulations and kind words you gave me and RecipeBoy for our partnership with McCormick. We are super excited to share the recipe videos that we created when we visited McCormick in Baltimore a couple of weeks ago. We had a total blast working together! Brooks will be sharing the first one on his blog next week. Let’s celebrate with a Givewaway- this giveaway is now closed.
In the meantime, I’ll share one of the recipes I created for McCormick Generation Fresh- a refresh on the classic Sloppy Joe recipe: Turkey Sloppy Joe Sliders

My freshened up recipe uses ground turkey instead of ground beef, there is no oil, sugar, ketchup or salt added, and I used a nice blend of spices to really pump up the flavor so you don’t miss any of that other stuff.

Here’s the very simple step-by-step: Cook the ground turkey in a skillet, then add tomato sauce and apple cider vinegar.

Then spice it all up! One of the keys to refreshing some of your regular-rotation recipes is to try taking out some of the extra fat, sodium and sugar that is typically added to a recipe, and use spices to boost the flavor instead.

For me, sauteed onions ALWAYS are a good idea. Saute some onions in a pan that has just been sprayed with a little nonstick spray. Once they are done browning, add a couple of tablespoons of water and let the onions simmer in the water to soften until the liquid has evaporated. Then they are perfect to add to your Sloppy Joe’s.

My Mom always added beans to her taco filling. It was her little secret for extending the filling to feed four hungry mouths in our house. I added beans here too- black ones, but you can add any beans you’d like. That extra fiber is good stuff.

My kiddo is quite fascinated with the little soft Hawaaian rolls, so we opted for those as our slider rolls with a little cheese melted in there too. Use any rolls you’d like, and if you’d prefer to make them bigger- it’s completely okay to use burger buns instead. If you need to keep this gluten-free, you can always serve the Sloppy Joe mixture over rice, quinoa or a baked potato too. This is a recipe that you can feel good about feeding your family, since there are no mystery ingredients. It’s so simple to make too.

Sneak peek: Here I am with Brooks in the McCormick kitchens (along with Chef Mark Garcia- Director of McCormick Kitchens). That dish you see there will be the one that Brooks will be sharing on his blog next week, along with the video that we made preparing it together!

Turkey Sloppy Joe Sliders
Yield: 8 sliders (or 4 burger-sized Joe's)
Prep Time: 20 min
Cook Time: 20 min
Ingredients:
1.25 pounds ground turkey (93% lean)
One 15-ounce can tomato sauce
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon McCormick smoked paprika
1 teaspoon McCormick ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon McCormick celery salt
1/2 teaspoon McCormick garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon McCormick chili powder
1/2 cup finely chopped sweet onion (1/2 medium)
1 cup canned black beans, rinsed
sliced Smoked Gouda or other cheese, optional
8 slider-sized Hawaiian rolls, cut in half (or other small rolls)Directions:
1. Spray a large skillet with nonstick spray. Heat over medium-high. Add turkey, using a spatula to break it up. Cook 4 to 5 minutes, or until cooked through.
2. Add tomato sauce and vinegar to the turkey. Continue to simmer over medium-high heat. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch, paprika, cumin, celery salt, garlic powder, and chili powder. Stir the spices into the turkey mixture, and continue to simmer 7 to 10 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced slightly and thickened.
3. Spray a small nonstick skillet with nonstick spray. Add onion and cook over medium heat until the onion begins to brown, stirring often, 4 to 5 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons of water and continue to cook until onions are softened and water has evaporated, 2 to 3 minutes.
4. Stir onions and beans into the turkey mixture. Divide the mixture between the slider buns. If topping with cheese, give the bottom buns with meat and cheese piled on top a quick warming under the broiler to melt the cheese. Add bun tops and serve.
Tips:
*To prepare this recipe as dairy-free, leave off the cheese.
*To prepare this recipe as gluten-free, just be sure to use a brand of black beans that is known to be GF, and serve the Sloppy Joe mixture over rice, quinoa or a baked potato instead of on a roll.Source: RecipeGirl.com

Mashed potatoes. I’ve tried recipes substituting cauliflower or other root vegetables and cutting down on the cream and butter, but nothing comes out as creamy and tasty as the real thing. So I just go without for the most part.

I love the addition of smoked paprika. I just started using it a little over a year ago and now I want to know why I hadn’t been using it my whole life! My biggest challenge in healthifying recipes is my husband… He’s not much into ground turkey/chicken instead of beef. I occasionally try it. He is pretty tolerant of me trying to make other things healthier – like adding a few more spices and cutting out some of the sugar in our cookies.

I would like to remake just about everything … I went vegan and sugar-free in December 2011 for my health but my husband tried it and couldn’t adjust to the meat- and dairy-free lifestyle. Now, it’s more challenging than ever to make meals that satisfy us both … generally, it’s vegan side dishes for me with plain meat on the side for him … not much fun!

As a Weight Watchers member I would love a lightened up version of my Chicken Katsu recipe. Chicken Katsu is a boneless breaded chicken thigh fried in oil and served with a scoop sticky white rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. This is typically found in L&L Hawaiian Barbecue (a franchise restaurant chain founded in Honolulu, Hawaii and found throughout the USA). I imagine that you could figure out a way to bake this instead of frying it but haven’t figured out how to do it yet.

Julia@cookandburn.com — October 4, 2012 @ 5:18 AM
For me, it’s broccoli rice casserole. I tried to make a healthier version last year for Thanksgiving and it ended up too dry. I hate to use processed cheese (as most recipes call for) but I still need it cheesy-creamy.

I try to make everything kinda healthy; my son is allergic to dairy (all the proteins – Caisen, Whey, etc) and Peanuts!! So I would love to see typical homemade yummy recipes turned allergy free using the McCormick Spices (that is what I use all the time, cost effective and delicious!!)… Anything Italian would be great!! Chicken Alfredo, Lasagna -oohh; cakes and cookies – something for Thanksgiving! Pumpkin Pie to Pecan Pie. I am still new at this mommy thing he has only been eating “people” food for 10 months (it’s a lot of change at my house – good thing I LOVE to cook!!)…I love your site and Recipe Boy too; my daughter makes a lot of his recipes!! Gee … can you make a big old hunk of cheese healthy? We love us some cheese in this family, but hubby (who’s had 2 angioplasties and a stent implanted this year) really should have less. What to do, what to do?
Amy J — October 4, 2012 @ 7:49 PM
I’m working on making my homemade mac&cheese recipe a bit more healthy. I eat GF so I make the cheese sauce and keep it separate so we can serve it over various things. We all like to have rice&cheese, hubby and I enjoy quinoa&cheese, and sometimes the kiddos want regular pasta with theirs. Can’t wait to see the work you and your son have done with McCormick!

I am in agreement with Shelley (at least 2 comments above). Italian dishes are so delicious, especially lasagna, but healthier recipes are difficult to come by. Some of them just don’t taste the same.
On another note I am planning on making a variation of the red velvet cookies you shared earlier this year, but with carrot cake instead as it is for an occasion for my brother and carrot cake is his favorite. Can’t wait to see how they turn out.
