 Bread and Butter Pickles

 

Be adventurous and try making your own...
 

25-30 medium 

 

cucumbers, thinly sliced

 

8 large 

 

onions, sliced

 

3 green 

 

bell peppers, seeded and sliced

 

½ cup 

 

canning salt

 

5 cups 

 

vinegar

 

5 cups 

 

granulated sugar

 

½ tsp 

 

whole cloves

 

2 Tbs 

 

mustard seed

 

1 tsp 

 

turmeric

 

1½ tbs 

 

celery seed

Place thinly sliced cucumbers, onions, peppers and salt in alternating layers in large container with water and ice cubes. Let stand for three hours; drain well.

In Dutch oven, boil together vinegar, sugar, cloves, mustard seed, turmeric and celery seed. Add cucumbers, onions and peppers and bring to a boil again.

Fill sterilized jars and cover with liquid. Seal.
