Preheat oven
to 350 degrees F. Grease 9x9" or 11x7" pan. |

Melt first
four ingredients in top of double boiler. Remove
from heat and add ½ cup walnuts and 1 t.
vanilla. Set aside. |

Sift
together flour, baking soda and ½ t. salt. Set
aside. |

Cream
together butter and brown sugar. Add egg and 1
t. vanilla Stir in sifted dry ingredients and
the rolled oats. |

Press 2/3 of
mixture into prepared pan. Spread with chocolate
filling mixture. Crumble remaining batter over
the filling and sprinkle with remaining ¼ cup
chopped walnuts. |

Bake 25-30
minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool
completely and cut into bars. |
