JUS by Julie Cleanse (my experience)

JUS by Julie 3 Day Cleanse

It has been about a year since I’ve done a juice cleanse.  I typically really like to do a 3-day juice cleanse every few months.  I just feel like they kind of get me back on track for eating healthy and not wanting to put processed foods into my body (at least for a while).  And I love the way that 3-days of consuming juice-only makes my body feel.  JUS by Julie contacted me recently to see if I’d like to try their cleanse.  I told them that if I tried it, I was going to be writing an honest review of the cleanse- the good and the bad.  They were confident that I’d like their juices better than any other juice cleanse I had tried, so they sent their juices along.

Unlike other juice cleanses I have tried, the JUS by Julie folks don’t recommend any sort of pre-cleanse preparation.  I was a little nervous about going from eating potato chips and wine to cleansing the next day… so I prepped for two days.  First day I cut out all processed foods and wine- ate pretty much protein, veggies and fruit only.  The second day I ate egg whites for breakfast, veggies and fruit the rest of the day, and a small sweet potato for dinner.  I’m also obsessed with Good Earth Sweet & Spicy Decaf tea, so I sipped that quite often.  I lost a couple of pounds in the two days of prepping for the cleanse, and I was really excited to start drinking juice!

DAY 1:  Their juices were delivered overnight via Fed Ex… in an ice-packed box.  I didn’t get mine delivered until 12pm, so I was pretty much starving by then!!

Here’s the lineup of Day 1:  First up was the Green Juice, which they refer to as MORNING GLORY  (romaine + celery + spinach + apple + kale + banana + strawberry).  I’m not a big fan of green juice, so I was not looking forward to this one at all.

JUS by Julie Green Juice

This pretty much captures my emotions about drinking green juice.  One thing that is different about this cleanse than the others I’ve tried is that the juices are BLENDED, not pressed… which means you’re getting all of the fiber and chunky stuff in your juice.  It just means that the juice is a little thicker to drink.  The verdict on the MORNING GLORY juice:  it was okay.  It was drinkable.  I didn’t love it, but I didn’t need to spit it out or anything either.  The addition of several fruit juices helps with the flavor.

Spicy Pomenade

Next was the SPICY POMENADE (pomegranate + lemon + maple syrup + cayenne pepper)  This one was good- much like a nice, refreshing sort of lemonade drink with a hint of spice.

I didn’t photograph the SWEET SPIN (another green juice), but it was better than the morning green juice (spinach + kale + pineapple + banana + mango).  The pineapple and mango really gave nice flavor to an otherwise undesirable green juice.  I didn’t love it, but I seriously don’t think I’m EVER going to love any sort of green juice at all.

Acai Blend

Drink 4 on Day 1 was the ACAI BLEND (Acai berries + blueberry + banana).  I liked this one, though it was quite thick to sip.  At this point in the day on Day 1… I was using the bathroom like every 30 minutes.  My body was not used to drinking so much liquid!

Not So Chunky

Drink 5 was like dessert, and I was really hoping this was the last drink of the day:  NOT SO CHUNKY (peanut butter + banana).  Since it was pretty much Happy Hour, I thought it would be nice to serve it in a martini glass.  The last drink of the day was another of the SWEET SPIN green juices.  It’s not really what I want to drink after having something so much like a milkshake, but I did it anyway.

My feelings after Day 1:  all was great, except I felt like I had to cram the juices into a short time period since they did not arrive until noon.  I felt full, and I wasn’t craving solid food at all.  I do have to admit that I was a little tired of having BANANA in 5 out of the 6 drinks (and this is coming from someone who absolutely LOVES banana).

DAY 2:  I was happy to be able to start the day early with a juice- but again I had to drink the green juice!  It was fine… I did it, and moved on with the rest of my day without trouble.  Instructions included with the cleanse explain that if you’re really, really hungry during the cleanse that you can have coffee, a moderate amount of steamed veggies and egg whites.  You’re also allowed to chew sugar-free gum.  I didn’t do any “eating,” but I did opt to chew gum.

JUS by Julie Chia Berry Juice

On day 2, the JUS by Julie folks subbed the CHIA BERRY (strawberry + lemon + pomegranate + chia seeds) for the ACAI BERRY.  This was a big surprise because I’ve never like chia seeds in anything I’ve tasted until I had this drink.  It was really, really good!

Choco Nana

I also had this drink on day 2:  CHOCO NANA (chocolate + banana + strawberries).  It was delicious, but it felt a little weird to be having any sort of chocolate during my juice cleanse.  All in all, day two went fine.  I wasn’t hungry for actual food, and the juices were enough to keep me feeling full.

Day 3 went fine too.  Though I have to admit that I was majorly tired of that banana flavor by Day 3, and I ended up skipping the last green juice of the day because… as I mentioned before, the peanut butter/banana drink feels like dessert.  So I called it a day after I drank that one.

For post-cleanse, JUS by Julie offers some suggestions of what to eat the day after your cleanse.  I’ve done so many juice cleanses before, so I thought it seemed like too much food compared to what I’m used to.  I stuck with eating fruits/veggies the first day post-cleanse, then gradually added protein in again on the second day.  By the 3rd day, I wanted wine and cheese again 🙂

JUS by Julie

Here are three juices that were not offered in my 3-day cleanse that I would definitely try next time.  The beet juice is usually my absolute favorite.

My final thoughts about the JUS by Julie 3-day cleanse:

  • Next time I do this cleanse (and yes, I’d do it again), I will definitely choose my own juices and not order so many juices that have banana in them.
  • I know you’re supposed to drink a good amount of water between juices, but I find it so hard to do so since you’re taking in so much liquid.
  • I didn’t feel hungry for food at all during this cleanse (though I did crave wine at 5 o’clock each day… but that’s probably just habit).
  • Did I lose weight?  Yes- though not nearly as much as other juice cleanses I’ve done- maybe 4 or 5 pounds.  It pretty much came right back on after going back to normal eating.  With other juice cleanses, I’ve had better success in keeping the weight off at least for a little while.  I’m not sure why… but I want to blame it on the banana 🙂
  • I know the fiber is good for you, but I do prefer drinking pressed juices over blended (especially with the green juice).

Thanks for the honest review, info, and super detailed post. Wow, so much detail – love it all! Your juice cleanse posts are my faves, seriously 🙂 Anyway, I would have gotten tired of banana-based juices, too. When you’re on a cleanse, something about banana, it feels a little heavy or thick. One or two, fine, but not 5/6 of them. Also pressed vs. with fiber and more like a smoothie – two totally different things and depends on my goal, preference that day, etc. but yes, on a cleanse, I’d want clear, pressed juices too. And no way to drinking green juice after the desserty/chocolate juice! Totally with you on that one!

I’d really probably like to get a juicer and try doing some of my own one of these days!

Thanks for the honest review…I didn’t want to try one until I read your review. Now I’m curious about the other brands you have tried! Thanks, Lori!

I did a review of BluePrint too… I think my favorite of all of them is Pressed Juicery.

Which juice cleanser did you like best and gave the best results?

I really enjoy the Pressed Juicery Cleanse. I tend to do that one more than any other that I’ve tried.

I’m in the middle of this cleanse. I don’t dislike green juices, but not a fan of the morning glory. I also agree with you about having sweet spin for the last juice, I decided not to follow the order and have the sweeter juice last…much more satisfying for me. As a side note, the Island Coconut is delicous! I was lucky enough to have that as one of my “sweet” number 5s.

Thank you for such an honest review!!! Did you have energy during this cleanse? Like, enough to run and workout?

I just did this cleanse I bought on groupon. I did not like it at all. My juices came late. It’s almost impossible for the company to respond to you. I felt sick almost after every single one. The meaning. Glory and the peanut butter ones were ok… I would use your money and buy your own juicer.

    • postedFeb 10, 2015 8:06 AM

interesting… have you tried other cleanses? I didn’t like this one as much as some of the other cleanses I’ve done, for sure.

Thanks for the review. I have a coupon for the juice and want to try it. Maybe it will be good for my first juice cleanse. After all 5lbs wont be so bad to lose.

Thanks for the feedback. I just ordered my second 3-day Jus by Julie cleanse and I agree 100% with your review. I definitely found it a bit more challenging to drink the green juice but it was “do-able.”  I also dropped a couple of pounds but put it back on – which I blame on my wine and chocolate habit.  It did keep me on track for a few days.  And yes, I am trying it again.

Are there others cleanses that are recommended? Just curious.

I really like the Pressed Juicery cleanse.

Great review… just thought I’d chime in with some male perspective 😉 I’ve been doing this cleanse for a while now and I really like it. I enjoy the blended juices because they are mealier – I find that the pulp makes the juice more substantive and more satisfying for me. Other cleanses I’ve tried don’t leave me feeling as satisfied after “meals”. I also really like the sweetening used – banana doesn’t bother me and I enjoy the taste and variety provided. I’ve tried both the 3 and 5 day cleanses several times, preferring the 5-day since I get a couple days of feeling great before I get back on solid food. I usually have them delivered the Friday before I actually want to start and freeze them, taking out each days’ worth of juices to allow them to thaw overnight. Also, I usually freeze the protein juice each day for about 45 minutes because I agree that they are desert-like, and “almost” frozen gives them a milkshake consistency (yummy!). I also agree with you that the last juice of the day seems non-sequitur and isn’t my favorite – and I have a freezer full of “Xtreme Greens” to prove it 🙂 As a side note, I’ve lost 60 pounds since I’ve started cleansing and have managed to keep it off (so far 😉

Except for the juice with peanut butter. the juices look tasty. Do they have a dietition who can help work around food allergies when picking the juices?

Just out of curiosity, what other diet cleanses have you tried that you really liked and kept the weight of longer? I am looking for something that will give me a good start on weight loss as I cleanse myself of processed foods.

    • postedJun 16, 2015 10:06 AM

I would guess that they have a dietician on staff who would help you (I know that other juice companies do). I’d email them. I am a big fan of Pressed Juicery- in my opinion, they have the best flavored juices.

    Hi Lori:

I’m playing around the Pressed Juicery site, and I see that there are 3 different cleanses offered.  Any guidance on which one to try – Cleanse 1 or Cleanse 2?  Thanks!

    • postedAug 11, 2015 7:49 PM

well, I’ve always done cleanse 2 since I’m used to doing cleanses… but if you’ve never done one before, it looks like #1 is maybe a better choice?

So this stuff really works? Is it healthy or even safe? Wouldn’t it be easier to do all this in your own blender at home? Sorry for all the questions, but I’ve never done juicing cleanse before.

I wanted to see if anyone had ordered a 3 day cleanse and got a bad batch? I ordered 2 3 day cleanse s for my daughter and I and it arrived a day late. The carton was room temperature when I unpacked the contents. I called the company and they said it would be okay to take the product the next day and freeze the remaining days. I also mentioned to customer service that the clense came with no # 1 only double of #3’s she said they were out of the #1 and that # 3 were basically the same thing.
This is the first time taking this product and heard a few good things about it form a friend who had taken it on 2 different occasions.
I started day one, took the #3 and with in 20 min went to the bathroom, then started to feel like I was gonna throw up? with in app. 45 min I was violetnly throwing up, at least 6 times till there was nothing left to get rid of.
I am certain this was the cause I was hospitalized for.  A few days later I had extreme adomal pain, fever, sings of appendicitis.
I had a cat scan done in the ER and it showed an infection on the right side of the colon and was for the first time that I was given a diagnose of Diverticulitis. I have never had any symptoms of this or had any diagnoses with this. I am very active, I work out 5 times a week, eat healthy teach marital arts and stay on a regular eating regiment.  I can eat nuts, popcorn and other foods that trigger the Diverticulitis with out any problems. The only thing that I changed in my regular diet is the one #3 juice cleanse form Jus for Julie. I was hospitalized for 5 days on bacterial and fungal antibiotics and now home with 10 more days of oral antibiotics.
This is has been such a scary ordeal for me and my family. While in the Er since the infection was on the right side of the colon, the surgeon wanted to remove 1/3 of my colon thinking at that moment that I had colon cancer.
The day I got sick I called the company letting them know what happened and they showed no concern just told me I could return the product for reimbursement.
Now that I am back home and have some more strength I am reaching back out to complain to them about the product and the bad batch.
2 of the 3 surgeons I saw think this product may have something to do with the infection since this is the only thing that I changed in my diet.
Has anyone had anything this horrible happen to them?
Please l would love to hear about it.

What a horrible experience! I’m sorry that happened to you. I’m always very weary of products that are delivered to me at room temp. I hope this product wasn’t the cause of this, but it certainly sounds suspicious. I’d reach out to the company again and have a discussion with them. Thanks for sharing your story.

I ordered a 5 day cleanse from Groupon. It arrived late and due to this sat on my steps for 2 days since no notification was given that it had arrived. It went bad. now while trying to sort out the issue they can only offer a coupon for the $60 shipping on my next purchase OR offer $100 coupon on my next purchase. So in other words I am out the $150 i spent on groupon and in order to get any compensation for their mistake I have to buy more of their product and spend another $150 and the $60 shipping cost. I dont have that money. I was excited to try their products but for $60 in shipping perishable items I feel that some more measures need to be taken. They wont even offer me to replace the products that went bad. I am very unhappy with this transaction and the service provided. No matter how good the products might be, if a business is not willing to fix a problem or assist without having the customer spending a ton more money to be able to “make up for it” (as they put it), I will never support their product. Sad thing is I am still wanting to use and try their product but if this is how they treat their customers I will look elsewhere.

I’m curious, why did you stop doing juice cleanses?  It made me wonder if there was new data suggesting they were no longer good for heath?

You know, I just really felt like they were messing with my body too much. I now prefer to do a 30 day Whole30 kind of program instead.
