Use an electric mixer to cream the shortening and sugar together in large bowl. Beat in the egg and molasses. Add the baking soda, spices and flour. Mix well.
Roll into walnut sized balls and then roll them in granulated sugar.
Place the cookie dough balls on an un-greased cookie sheet (can line with parchment, if you'd like) and press down crisscross with a fork. Bake for 8 minutes. Remove to a wire rack and let them cool completely.
