October 31st is Halloween! This is a day to celebrate all things spooky. Many people have Halloween parties (both kids and adults), and it’s fun to display some spooky treats on the dessert table. These Halloween Spider Cookies are a fun and delicious option! They’d also be great for a bake sale, movie night with spooky snacks, trick-or-treat gatherings or a neighborhood potluck.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Rolled oats
  • All purpose flour
  • Baking soda and salt
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Butter
  • Brown sugar and white sugar
  • Vanilla extract
  • Eggs
  • Chocolate chips
  • Nuts (optional)

How to make Spider Chocolate Chip Cookies:

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Cover 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or silpat mats.
  2. Place rolled oats in blender or food processor and process until finely ground. Combine ground oats, flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon in mixing bowl.
  3. In another bowl, use an electric mixer to combine the butter, sugars and vanilla. Add the eggs, and beat until fluffy.
  4. Stir the flour mixture into the egg mixture, blending well. Add the nuts (if using) to the dough and mix well. Using a heaping tablespoonful for each cookie, scooping round balls, and place 2½-inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  5. Bake until the cookies are lightly browned, 10 to 12 minutes.

Place 3 chocolate chips on top of each cookie for the spider bodies as they come out of the oven.

How to create the spiders:

The chocolate chips will melt, creating a scraggly body. In a small cup, melt ¼ cup chocolate chips in the microwave. Use a piping bag to pipe melted chocolate on for the legs.

  • Don’t stress about them being perfect!
  • I know that spiders have 8 legs. You can certainly add 8 legs if you want!
  • Chill them after adding the melted spider legs for quick setting.
  • You can make these Halloween spider cookies ahead of time. Just let them set completely before stacking and storing. Stack between layers of waxed paper.
