Honey Molasses Chicken Drumsticks

This is a great recipe to make for families with young kids.  Kids definitely are drawn to the appeal of picking up drumsticks with their fingers.  Finger foods are fun for kids!

Picky eaters tend to love these drumsticks.  They’re covered with a simple glaze, and they’re delicious!

Honey Molasses Chicken Drumsticks

Yield: 6 servings (1 drumstick per serving)

Prep Time:15 minutes

Cook Time:20 minutes

Ingredients:

SAUCE:

  • 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic

CHICKEN:

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 6 chicken drumsticks, skin removed
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Directions:
  1. Combine sauce ingredients in a small bowl; whisk together and set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper. Add chicken to pan, browning on all sides. Add honey mixture to pan, turning chicken to coat. Reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and cook 15 minutes or until chicken is done, turning chicken every 5 minutes. Uncover and cook an additional minute or until mixture is thick and darker color, and the chicken is well coated. Remove from heat; serve immediately, or cool before refrigerating.
Tips:
  • Nifty tip: Before measuring out your honey, spray your measuring spoon with nonstick spray. The honey won't stick to the spoon and it will slide right off!

    I’m a nanny for a family of four and I eat very differently than they do. I eat a lot of traditional (I guess cultural) meals with marrow bones, animal organ meats, and tons of salads. I always find it hard to come up with homemade “country-loving” food that the kids will go for, as their parents cook mostly pasta and microwave foods. This is a great idea for a simple evening meal with REAL food! The family didn’t have molasses, but I just omitted it (I’ll put it on the list for next time). Serving it tonight with sweet potato casserole, a side of peas and carrots!

    I tried this tonight and after following the directions as listed, was terribly disappointed. The chicken looked light brown like the picture, but was underdone. The sauce was boring. None of my 5 children were interested in eating it. Major dinner fail, but we muddled through it.

    Since we only ate half of the meal, and I wanted to salvage the leftovers, I covered the remaining drumsticks and put it on high for about 10 minutes (I forgot I had turned the burner back on). When I smelled a slight burning smell I remembered the chicken and opened it. Voila. Gorgeous sticky dark brown glazed chicken legs. My husband ate one and deemed it delicious, and a meal worth making again (which I will).

    My suggestion would be to make sure the sauce is VERY brown (almost black) and sticky, rather than going by a certain amount of time. And I’d also suggest turning up the heat!

    Just made these tonight!! OMG…YUM!! I don’t have access to my stove right now so I just mixed up the sauce, poured over the chicken in a baking dish & baked it. 350 degrees for about 50 minutes & then let sit for another 5 minutes. PERFECT!! Sautéed some kale & had a delicious dinner. I will be trying in my crockpot next time! Thanks for an amazing quick & easy dinner!!
