I love this retro-casserole recipe for its simplicity and guilty pleasure indulgence. It’s not often anymore that we cook for convenience. I definitely cook more fresh and healthy or grilled dinners than anything else. But every once in a while I love a comfort food meal like macaroni and cheese, fried chicken or this easy Tater Tot Casserole. It has a short list of ingredients, and it’s very simple to make.

Ingredients needed:

  • ground beef
  • onion
  • frozen Tater Tots
  • cream of mushroom soup
  • milk
  • cheddar cheese

How to make Easy Tater Tot Casserole:

Brown ground beef and chopped onion in a hot skillet. Use any ground beef that you have on hand. You will spoon out and discard the extra fat before continuing with the recipe.

Transfer the ground beef to a 9×13-inch pan and top with frozen Tater Tots. In a pinch, you could also use frozen hash browns for this recipe.

sauce for tater tot casserole

The sauce for this easy Tater Tot casserole is a mix of canned cream of mushroom soup and milk. The recipe calls for 2 cans of soup. So if you wanted to mix things up and use one can of cream of chicken and one can of cream of mushroom, you could do that. Or if you’re not into mushrooms at all, use all cream of chicken soup.

Since this Tater Tot casserole is a pretty indulgent meal, you might want to consider serving it with an excellent salad such as my Easy Gourmet Salad, Avocado Pine Nut Salad or simply sautéed green beans. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed this, however it tastes better if you add garlic to it. It gives it more flavor.

I chose this recipe because it didn’t include green beans. My husband loved it. I did use ground pork instead of ground beef,

Great for our large family get together. I cooked the potatoes first to make them crispy. Then add them to the too. It said cook for forty minutes u covered, although the recipes says cook 50 minutes so the last 10 minutes, I covered with foil & added the rest of the cheese! There’s so many things you can add to tweak this recipe. Thanks for posting

I always add a couple bags of frozen veges after the meat layer.then I put on the cheese layerr. I only use 1 can of creamy whatever kind I have of soup with one can of milk – mixed in a little bowl, which I pour over the cheesy layer. Then I put the tater tots on top, cover with foil and bake at 350 for 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 hrs…till the cheese /soup melts altogether. Also some people take the foil off for the last 10 to 15 minutes to make the tater tots crunchy.

Easy comfort food! Used cream of chicken and cream of mushroom with roasted garlic, and shredded pepper jack because we like a little zip. Excellent!
