Caramel Apple Scones are the most delicious scones recipe. They are apple scones drizzled with caramel icing.
Watch the video showing you how to make these scones, then scroll to the bottom of this post to print out the complete recipe so you can make them at home.
Caramel apples aren’t a big deal in my house for a few very-good-reasons. Personally, I can’t seem to get behind the idea that biting into a round and sticky surface is somehow going to work out all right. My son isn’t allowed to bite into anything hard with his front teeth since he knocked part of his tooth out with a baseball bat last year. The caramel would latch onto that temporary tooth and suck it right out of his mouth. And my husband just isn’t into getting messy at all.
I had to compromise with a fall caramel apple treat that would please everyone in my house- these Caramel Apple Scones. They are a tender scone flanked with fresh cinnamon apples, and there’s a caramel icing drizzled generously on top.
Ingredients needed for Caramel Apple Scones:
- flour
- white sugar, brown sugar and powdered sugar
- butter
- apples
- Greek vanilla yogurt
- milk
- baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and vanilla extract
How to make Caramel Apple Scones:
First things first: prepare the apples. You’ll chop them up finely for these scones. Cook them in a hot skillet with a little butter until they are softened, mix in the cinnamon, and let them cool.
Next: prepare the scone dough. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda.
Add cold chunks of butter and mix it again…
…until rough crumbs form.
Stir in the Greek vanilla yogurt and your cooled spiced apples.
On a floured surface, form the scone dough roughly into a 14 x 4-inch flattened log. Use a sharp knife to cut triangles (you’ll get 11 or 12).
Gently pull the triangles apart and set them on a silpat or parchment-lined baking sheet in the same shape, leaving about 1/2-inch between scones.
When they bake, they’ll have some room to spread and crowd into each other, as pictured.
After cooling for a few minutes, use a knife to coax them apart and move them to a rack over a baking sheet.
Next: make the caramel icing. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter, and then add the brown sugar and milk. Stir, then transfer to a bowl. Add the vanilla and powdered sugar, and beat with an electric mixer until it turns creamy.
Drizzle the caramel icing onto the warm scones. Add as much or as little as you want.
I went for “much” drizzle, of course.
And then you can enjoy them for breakfast… with coffee or tea or hot chocolate. Revel in the fact that you can eat them without getting a face full of sticky caramel and apple juices dripping down your chin, unless you like that sort of thing.

Recipe Details
Ingredients
APPLES:
- 1 tablespoon salted butter
- 1 large Gala or Granny Smith apple, peeled & chopped finely
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
SCONE DOUGH:
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1/3 cup granulated white sugar
- 2 tablespoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold salted butter, cut into chunks
- 1 cup Greek vanilla yogurt (nonfat is fine)
CARAMEL ICING:
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup sifted powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with a silpat mat or parchment paper.
PREPARE THE APPLES:
- Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the apples- stir and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, or until apples are softened. Stir in the cinnamon and set the apples aside to cool (or to speed up the cooling process, remove them from the heated pan and into a bowl).
PREPARE THE SCONE DOUGH:
- In the bowl of a mixer, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda. Add the butter and mix again until coarse crumbs form (you can also do this step in a food processor). Stir in the yogurt and apples until the dough comes together (it will be dry, so you may need to eventually use your hands). Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and form roughly a 14 x 4-inch flattened log. Use a sharp knife to cut triangle-shaped scones (11 or 12). Gently pull the triangles apart and set them on your prepared baking sheet in the same rectangular shape, leaving about 1/2-inch between scones. When they bake, they'll have some room to spread and crowd into each other.
BAKE THE SCONES:
- Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until they are cooked through and no longer doughy in the middle. Let the scones cool for a few minutes, then gently coax them apart with a knife and move them to a rack over a baking sheet.
ICE THE SCONES:
- In small saucepan, heat butter until melted. Stir in brown sugar and milk. Cook over medium-low heat for 1 minute. Transfer to a mixing bowl and cool the mixture slightly. Stir in the vanilla and 1/2 cup powdered sugar. Beat with an electric mixer until well blended. If necessary, add up to 1/4 cup more powdered sugar for desired consistency. Drizzle icing over warm scones.

Notes
- These scones are best eaten the day they're made, but they're perfectly good eaten the next day too (keep them in a covered container).
- If you'd like to make these the night before, that's totally okay- keep them in a covered container. But add the icing in the morning, just before serving.
- For creamy Greek yogurt, I like to use Oikos or Voskos.
2 tablespoons of baking powder? Really, is it supposed to be teaspoons?
yes, tablespoons is correct.
My new favorite breakfast recipe!! A must try!!!
Just made these this morning and they are absolutely awesome!!
Just a hint that I have learned about scones, place the pan with scones into the freezer for 30 minutes then straight into the oven. They will always rise beautifully.
Thanks for the wonderful recipe.
Just made these……. They are so dangerous I have had to ask people to come round and share!! So delicious!!!
would these be ok to make the dough the night before and put them in the fridge overnight then cook in the morning?
They look great!
I’ve never done that with scones, so I’m not sure!
if these taste half as good as the batter they are a winner….we couldn’t stop “sampling” these as we shaped into scones!
This sounds like a fabulous recipe! I will be pinning this and adding it to my recipe file. I plan to share this on Monday on Celebrate and Decorate. Visitors will have to click over to your blog for the recipe, I hope it helps a lot of others discover your wonderful blog.
FABULOUS! These scones are delicious. I made them for a meeting, but unfortunately it was cancelled at the last minute. I took a chance and froze the batch (icing and all). 10 days later I defrosted and served them and everyone raved about them. This recipe is definitely a keeper. Thank you.
I made these last night and just ate one. OH MY, these are amazing. It was definitely the BEST SCONE I have ever eaten. I love the flavor and texture of these, they taste so light. Thank you for a truly wonderful recipe. I will be making these often.
Ohhh YUM! How delicious do these look?! Love some sunday scones!
i just made them! FANTASTIC 😀 i loved the icing
Do you think I could make the scones the night before, refrigerate them, and then bake in the morning?
I’ve not tried that, so I can’t say.
Any thoughts as to how these would do frozen?
I’d probably freeze them without the icing. Defrost at room temp. Ice later, if desired.
These look yummy! Can you use buttermilk instead of greek yogurt?
I wouldn’t think so… too liquidy!
These are SO amazing!! And, thanks for the incredible instructions (pics a definite plus!). I’ve never made scones before, but these turned out PERFECTLY! I did make these the day before my morning event, and even glazed them the night before, and I didn’t notice a need to “add the icing in the morning, just before serving.” They turned out so great!! Thanks again!
OMG, These look perfect. I asked my mom to go to the store to pick up some flour and greek yogurt for these scones. I am baking these tonight. Can’t wait to see how these will turn out.
I made these today and put it on pinterest. I didn’t put the carmel on top this time. It is delicious, soft inside and crunchy on the outside.I think next time I will add maple syrup or maple flavor to the mix.
These were great! I don’t use salted butter so I added some salt to the dough and it added just the right amount of saltiness. Look for my post of making these on November 9 on andreasgardencooking.com. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!
I had an Orange Cox apple sitting around and wanted to find something to do with it, so I gave this a shot! It turned out really delicious. I used plain, full-fat Greek yogurt (sadly that’s all they have here in Germany..).
I just made these and they are delicious! Warm right out of the oven they are perfection!
Thanks for the recipe – tried these out yesterday and they turned out amazing!
I’m kind of a scone nut… so, you have one fan right here!
Made these this morning for Parent Book Club at my children’s school – huge hit! Thanks for another great recipe and for getting me over my fear of making a scone.
Hooray for caramel apple goodness without all the mess! This is a keeper. 🙂
A perfect snack with a cup of coffee or your favorite cup of tea.
These look wonderful and perfect for the Fall!! Thanks for the tip on cutting the scones too. Love the caramel drizzle sauce 🙂
Those look amazing!!
Just made these, found the recipe on Pinterest. Thanks so much!!!
Scones look awesome.
I see you have a print AND save button. I have discovered your secret now!!! 😛

These scones look like the perfect baking project for this weekend. Just so perfect for this time of year too.
These look wonderful and perfect for fall!
Mmmmm, I need these right now!
What fabulous fall flavors! I’m a huge fan of scones and I’m sure these wouldn’t last very long.
These scones look amazing! Lucky for me I have some Granny Smith apples just sitting and waiting for me to bake with! 🙂
Ohhhh Lori. you must have been reading my mind. I was going to make a similar recipe over the weekend! YUM!
These are absolutely heavenly! And because they’re “scones,” I can totally eat this for breakfast guilt-free 🙂
Yes please!! I don’t do the caramel apple thing either, but I love dipping apple slices in caramel. This looks like the best of both worlds, and for breakfast!
It’s apple season here in the NE and neat recipes like this one are sure to be a hit!
As a girl who has chipped her front tooth trying to break into a caramel apple – I too stare clear of this festive treat. But these scones look delightful, and not dangerous to pearly whites! Love.
Holy Moly!!! The caramel apple scones look amazing! I can’t WAIT to get to the store, buy the ingredients and bask in the wonderful taste and smell of these little bits of awesomeness!!
So excited to have found your blog.
🙂 Beverly
I’m not a big fan of caramel apples, either, but I love the flavor in other desserts. These scones look fabulous, Lori!
very nice recipe Lori, I love that you made the scones in a rectangle, I always did mine round…i like this new technique…m
Yummy..I bought Gala apples yesterday. I love the photo steps with this recipe. I am a very visual person, so this will surely help me as I go along with the recipe.
I just love to try this recipe but which kind of apples do you use here in South Africa we get the Granny Smith- Golden delicious and some different Red Apples
Thank you for sharing all the delicious recipes with us
Any!
I wish I could bite into caramel apples – but after nearly a decades’ worth of orthodontia in elementary and middle school – the last thing I’m going to do is risk ruinging it by a rogue apple! THESE though – I would savor ever single crumb. Beautiful Lori. I’ve been hankering scones lately. Fab.
How fabulous! I`m not big on scones, but I would eat them with apples and caramel!
this sounds like an amazing combo for breakfast!
Yum! Give me carbs over a regular caramel apple any day! These look awesome Lori!
Those photos are gorgeous! Gonna have to try this with white whole wheat flour very soon (and with some cinnamon in that drizzle, yum). Baking is back in the kitchen now that our NC temps are way down! I’m not a fan of caramel apples either, too awkward to nibble and I have jaw issues that don’t need that stress! Thanks, Lori
I’ll take one of these over a candy apple any day! Great fall recipe, especially with that drizzle!
These look amazing! Great idea for scones!
I loved this recipe, is so autumnal, I really want to make it. Thank you so much for sharing it!!Have a great week!! 😀
I love this compromise! Great recipe Lori 🙂
they look amazing and your whole intro about biting into something hard and sticky (and sorry about his tooth!!) and that all that stickiness just cannot end well – I agree! And love the idea of your scones as a compromise. Great glaze, too!
These look so amazing!! Adding to my “must try soon” list! =)
These look phenomenal! I saw them on pinterest!
Oh, hello fall! These are perfect, Lori. I love caramel apple flavors, great idea for scones!
So happy to have come across this recipe. Love the photography! Will try these next month.
Thanks, Lori! I saw these on your Instagram and wondered what flavor they’d be. My all-time favorite fall thing to bake is your Caramel Apple Bars. These sound like an awesome breakfast version. I might sprinkle a light combination of oats and pecans on top.
Those scones look fabulous, but it’s the glaze I really want:-) Would it be bad to make it and “forget” to drizzle it on the scones?
I really, really love scones and they look so darn yummy!
These scones look marvellous!!!Thank you for this deliciousness!!!
Oh heavens! I need these for breakfast!
Oh man, do these look good! PERFECT fall scone recipe!!
Delish!
Oh my goodness, Lori. I’m drooling over these! I definitely want to make a batch for my family next weekend.
These look amazing, Lori!!! These look so much better than trying to make your way through an actual caramel apple. 🙂
Oh yes please! I’m a sucker for scones and these ones look hearty and perfect!
OMG, these look delish. Between the combination of apple and caramel, plus it being a scone, I’m already thinking breakfast/snack.
Oh, and I love how you cut your scones. It’s easy, and, from the looks of it, doesn’t take too much time. 🙂
Oh man do I love a good scoon. These are gorgeous!!!
These look fantastic and perfect for fall! Love the apple caramel combo!
I so agree with you about caramel apples. The flavours are great but the idea of biting into one is really not appealing. I love that you took the idea and made it into something even more delicious!
