How to Make Jam Thumbprint Cookies

  1. Make the Cookie Dough: Cream the butter and powdered sugar until smooth and fluffy. Mix in the egg, extracts, and salt. Blend in the flour just until combined — don’t overmix.
  2. Shape the Cookies: Roll dough into tablespoon-sized balls and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Lightly flatten with a sugar-coated glass. Press your thumb into each dough ball to create a small well.
  3. Fill with Jam: Spoon a small amount of jam into each indentation. Don’t overfill — a little goes a long way!
  4. Bake: Bake at 325°F for about 15 minutes, or until the bottoms are lightly golden. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a rack.
  5. Optional Finishing Touch: Dust lightly with powdered sugar for a soft, festive finish.

Tips for Baking Perfect Thumbprint Cookies

  • Use room-temperature butter — cold butter makes cracking more likely.
  • Press gently when making the indentation so the cookie doesn’t split.
  • If cookies crack, no worries — just pinch them back together before baking.
  • Seedless jams work best for smooth, bakery-style results.
  • Don’t overfill or the jam may bubble over as the cookies bake.
