How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte

I’m excited about my recipes this week.  That doesn’t really tell you all that much since I’m  excited about new recipes every week… but this week I’m particularly excited.  Why is that, you ask? Well,  I loved this week’s recipes.  My husband loved this week’s recipes.  My son loved this week’s recipes.  I hope you love them too.  Today I’m going to show you  How to Make Your Very Own Pumpkin Spice Latte, in the comfort of your own home… without waiting in long lines or shelling out a gazillion pennies.   We’re going to make a “tall” latte, as they say in the coffee world.  You’ll be able to get two regular coffee-cup sized lattes out of this method if you’re willing to share the goods with someone else.

I love Instagram.  I shared this photo the other day on Instagram after making this latte and messing with my Camera + App.  You can do the coolest things with photos on your iPhone.

Anyway, here’s how you make this…

Brew your favorite cup of coffee in your cutest coffee cup.  Strong, if you want a strong coffee flavor in your latte.  We use a single brewer Keurig since we don’t go through pots of coffee at our house.  I just found out recently that you can get one of those K-Cup things if you like to brew with your favorite grounds.

Add pumpkin puree to a half cup of milk.  I used whole milk since I love that rich flavor.  If I were on a diet, like I should be, I’d use nonfat milk.

Add brown sugar…

…and vanilla extract…

…and pumpkin pie spice.  Did you know you can make your own pumpkin pie spice?  See the tips in my recipe below…

Whisk all that good stuff together.

And then put it in the microwave.

One or two minutes later, and your pumpkin milk mixture is hot and frothy and ready for latte – ing.

Pour all of that pumpkin milk into a tallish mug or glass.

Pour your hot cup of coffee in next.

Add a little half & half.

Add a teaspoon of sugar…

…and stir and taste.  Add more sugar if you’d like it sweeter.

Add a little bit of whipped cream (optional, but not really).

Okay, add a lot of whipped cream (it’s better that way).

Sprinkle nutmeg on top.

How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte at Home

And there you go!  No lines, no weird syrups, and perfectly delicious for a chilly fall morning.  See why I was so excited?  Love.

Yield: 1 drink

Prep Time: 10 min

Cook Time: 4 min

Pumpkin Spice Latte

Do It Yourself version of Starbuck's delicious Pumpkin Spice Latte...


1/2 cup whole milk

1 tablespoon unsweetened canned pumpkin puree
1 teaspoon packed light brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup hot brewed, strong coffee
2 tablespoons half & half cream
1 teaspoon granulated white sugar, or more to taste
whipped cream, optional
ground nutmeg


1. In a glass measuring cup or microwave-safe bowl, whisk together milk, pumpkin, brown sugar, spice and vanilla. Microwave for 1 to 2 minutes- watch closely and remove it from the microwave when the milk is hot and frothy.

2. Pour the pumpkin milk into a tall mug or glass. Add hot coffee. Pour in the cream. Add a teaspoon of sugar. Stir, and taste. Add more sugar, if desired.

3. Optional, but oh so good... add whipped cream on top and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Serve immediately!


*Feel free to lighten up the recipe by using nonfat milk and fat-free half & half. It won't be as rich, but it will still give you that yummy pumpkin latte flavor.

*If you don't have pumpkin pie spice in your collection of spices, make your own! Mix equal parts of cinnamon, ginger, allspice and nutmeg- and measure from there.

    Mmm! This sounds delightful! I just made my own pumpkin puree a few nights ago, and if you’re up for this you should really try doing it yourself, no more searching shelves for over priced cans of pumpkin! I bought a nice sweet pumpkin, it was actually a green gord I can’t remember the name of it (I chose organic because I find they are so much more flavorful!) and I cut that bad boy in half and roasted flesh side down at 400 degrees until it was soft, pulled it out of the oven and pureed it in my food processor. Boy! I’m telling you the flavor difference is insane! I payed 7 dollars for my pumpkin and got 9 cups of puree out of it! Its so sweet and fresh and freezes really well. I just separated it into 1 cup increments and put those in baggies and froze them.

    I have an breville espresso machine I scored at goodwill for 23 dollars, it was broken at the time but my hubby cracked that bad boy open and fixed it. Now I have the most incredible espresso everyday! I enjoy iced americanos and spiced soy lattes very much! I’m also a cappucino girl. What can I say I’m a barista at heart, I mean I AM from Oregon! But now that I saw this lovely recipe I think I am going to have to pull one of those zip loc bags out and defrost it and treat my hubby to a fall delight. Thanks so much for sharing!

    I love my morning cup of Joe so much that it is almost a ritual for me. I like a medium roast, with one packet of sweet n low and about a tablespoon of a liquid, flavored creamer. I switch of the creams to keep it intresting! It makes the drive to work so much more enjoyable 🙂

    I love my coffee so many ways! Black with a splash of cream, frozen with a bit of caramel, mixed half and half with steamed milk and a taste of gingerbread, and definitely purchased from Starbucks as a pumpkin spice latte! Mmm I need to go brew some coffee now 🙂

    I made this Pumpkin Spice Latte for my sweet husband and our 2 children. They Love LoVE LOVED it! Of course I used Starbucks French roast for that great coffee taste. We visit Starbucks about once a week and I love a good Starbucks Latte whenever I can get one. Thanks for developing the recipe. soooo yum.

    While coffee is very much a necessity I still try to this “daily staple” as a little treat that helps me start my day off right. Depending on the season I like it iced, spiced, warm, sugared, creamed, flavored, etc. On days where I find myself in need of an extra pick me up I add a dollop whipped cream..a few calories are undeniably worth starting your day on the right foot! I also live by the philosophy that if it’s homemade it’s good for you so If the coffee shop makes their whipped cream from scratch I am obligated to ALWAYS say yes!

    The stronger the better! I like to start with a cup of espresso blend coffee brewed extra strong with the “strong brew” feature on my coffee maker. I warm my fat free half and half, add whatever flavorings I’m in the mood for as well as some splenda and then stir it all together.     Try the Vanilla Bean Frappaccino with a shot of the pumpkin spice! Yummy and a great alternative for kids or people who don’t want/like the espresso but want the fall flavor.     I am falling in love with starting with a base of Starbucks Via……that way I can enjoy Starbucks without leaving the house. The simpliest that I also do a lot is to mix Via with 2 parts water, 1 part milk, French Vanilla coffee creamer to taste. I’m going to have to make this Pumpkin Spice Latte VERY soon!!

    PURE Yum! I did have to catch myself several times thinking- you night 2 pumpkins specially to purée just to make a coffee? ( I’m in the UK- we don’t do canned purée in the shops!).     I can’t believe I saw this post- i was literally just talking to my roommate today about how I need to stop buying pumpkin spice lattes everyday because they are both costing me too much money and too many extra minutes at the gym.

    Normally I brew my coffee with a little cinnamon and nutmeg mixed in with the grounds and then just add some non-fat half and half (i’m a 3 cups a day girl so I have to cut the cals somehow). But when the holidays come around, the employees at Starbucks start to learn my name because I CAN”T resist their drinks!

    Thanks so much for this recipe! As a stay at home mom with a 6 week old, I was looking for a way to treat myself inexpensively and without leaving the house. This is it! I usually brew myself a double shot of espresso in the mornings, and if my little one is peacefully asleep, I will add hot water for an americano or steamed milk for a cappuccino.     It seems like all the ingredients and work would be just as costly as a ‘gazillion’ pennies? Maybe it’s just me, but a quick trip through an expert coffee shop like Starbucks does the trick for me…especially since they use espresso and not just a junky cup of coffee.

    This time of year, I am drawn to the pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks. I look forward to it each year! I am on a diet, and I make room for it on my plan. I ask for non fat milk and no whipped cream. I have tried to ask for half of the syrup, but I really like it with all of the flavor.
    But, typically, I can be found each morning brewing my own at home. I add cream and Splenda. Life is good.

    I didn’t read through all the comments, but just a quick tip on adding some froth to your latte. I put about 1/2 c of milk in a mason jar, screw on the lid, and then shake it for about 30-45 seconds. Take the lid off and microwave for 30 seconds. Voila! Frothed milk! Just use a fork to hold the froth when adding the milk to your coffee, then scoop the rest on top.

    This is amazing! I’ve been searching for a great latte recipe that doesn’t actually require a latte machine. Tried it today (rainy & cold, perfect day), and I loved it! It was so simple & easy. Thanks for the pumpkin spice tip as well, definitely needed that. I’ve pinned this on Pinterest as well, given credit & all.
