Blueberry Margaritas

These frozen blueberry margaritas have a beautiful vibrant purple color. The flavor is a sweet and tangy combination of blueberry and lime.

You can use margarita glasses for serving these blueberry margaritas (that’s traditional). Or you can choose to use some chunky Mexican-style glasses (or your regular drinking or cocktail glasses, if you must).

Ingredients Needed:

  • Tequila: Use a decent tequila that you LIKE for making a blueberry margarita. It makes a difference. For the best results, choose a tequila that if 100% pure agave. I like to use a blanco or silver tequila.
  • Blueberries: Use fresh blueberries or frozen blueberries. Frozen blueberries will help lend a slushy consistency to the drink when blended with the ice.
  • Limeade: Most margarita recipes call for using fresh lime juice, but in this recipe we’re going to use limeade. Trust me… it works for making a good fruity margarita!
  • Powdered Sugar: This helps make the blueberry margarita a little sweeter. You can leave it out if you don’t want it so sweet.
  • Orange Liqueur: Use Cointreau, Triple Sec or Grand Marnier.
  • Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice will be used to rub the rim of your glass.
  • Sugar: Superfine sugar is used to rim the glass instead of salt. A sweet rim works well with a fruity margarita!
  • Ice: You’ll use some ice for blending it into a frozen margarita.

How to make a Blueberry Margarita:

The complete, printable recipe is at the end of this post.

  1. Blend together ice, blueberries, tequila, limeade, powdered sugar and orange liqueur.
  2. Ditch the salt rim for a sugar rim! Instead of edging the rim with salt, as you do in a classic margarita, these will be edged to be sweet rather than salty. Edging these in sugar will make the sugar complementary to the sweetness of the blueberry margarita. Just dip the edge of the glass in orange juice, and then dip into granulated white sugar. Even better, if you have baker’s fine sugar lying around, edge it in that instead. Every sip you take, you’ll get a little sugar with your blueberry margaritas!

Recipe Tips

  1. Keep margarita glasses in the freezer until ready to serve.
  2. Blueberry juice can be found in the juice section of your market. Add a little blueberry juice to intensify the flavor, if desired.
  3. Garnish your blueberry margaritas with a lime slice or a lime wedge!
  4. Pair these sweet margaritas with some spicy tacos for the perfect Mexican dinner.
  5. Change out the blueberries for raspberries!

How do you make virgin Blueberry Margaritas?

Just follow the directions to do everything as instructed, but leave out the tequila and orange juice in place of the orange liqueur. They’ll be kind of like blueberry smoothies for the little ones. Non-alcoholic margaritas are actually pretty popular these days!

Ingredients

Instructions

  • In a blender, blend all ingredients except the orange juice and the granulated sugar. Blend until smooth.
  • Dip the rims of the serving glasses in orange juice and then in sugar. Pour the frozen blueberry mixture into the glasses.

Notes

  • You can substitute triple sec or Grand Marnier for the Cointreau, if desired.
  • Don’t dip these margaritas in salt! The blueberry flavor is much better with the sweet accompaniment of sugar.
