Culinary Covers July 23

Here’s what’s been happening on my other blog- Culinary Covers– lately:  Flag Berry Tarts (I can’t even imagine how long these took to make, but they’re absolutely gorgeous- by Lindsey from Cafe Johnsonia), Braised Eggs with Lamb, Tahini and Sumac (from the cover of the Jerusalem cookbook.  It looks absolutely delicious, and what a fabulous photo from Faith at An Edible Mosaic), Fallen Chocolate Souffle Cake (from the cover of the Sweet Melissa Baking Book– and another gorgeous photo from Deborah at Taste & Tell) and finally Spaghetti with Parsley Pesto (from the cover of June’s Bon Appetit by Joanne at Eats Well With Others).  Come read the reviews on these cover recipes!

Good Summer Reads

I’ve mentioned my sister Susie before, but she’s a MANIAC with reading.  She plows through books, and she’s always eager to find new titles to devour.  I asked her to share three books that she’s loved lately so I could pass them on to my readers.  Here’s what she gave me (I bought the first two for my Kindle and can’t wait to read them!)

1. The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls – Taking place in 1970 this is the story of 12-year old, Bean, and her 5-year old sister, Liz. After their erratic, unreliable mother disappears, the girls cross the country to find the only other relative they know of, their mother’s reclusive brother. Settling in in rural Virginia, the girls begin to learn more about their mother and her past, while also witnessing the end of segregation in a town that isn’t ready for much of anything or anyone different.

2. The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls by Anton DiSclafani – During the Great Depression 15-year old Thea is banished from the only home and family she has ever known after a family tragedy in which she played a central role. Thea is initially shattered both by what happened and by being sent away, but the camp (which is really a school) turns out to be exactly what Thea needs to begin to understand that the world is painted in much broader strokes than her family ever let her believe.

3. The Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker – The golem, Chava: A mythical creature made of clay, created by a rabbi to serve a master, who suddenly died. The jinni, Ahmad: A jinni from Syria who had been held in a bottle for hundreds of years by a cruel master, but is suddenly released (though not really free). Both the golem and the jinni find themselves in 1900 New York City with nothing familiar around them. With the help of a few strangers and each other they learn to survived.

Heirloom Tomato and Beet Salad

I’m DYING to try this recipe:  Heirloom Tomato and Beet Salad.  My sister Susie (she’s the star of my blog today) served it up for a little dinner she hosted and everyone wholeheartedly agreed that it was amazing.  She sprinkled goat cheese on top, which sounds like a perfect idea to me.  The recipe can be found in the June 2013 issue of Cooking Light magazine.


And finally, spotted on the KitchenAid blog:  10 Tips for Making the Ultimate Burger.  This was written and photographed by Kelly Senyei of the beautiful food blog: Just a Taste.  She shares some terrific tips, especially for those of us who are “grill- challenged!”
