Ten in 10: Ten Weeks to Healthy in 2010 (here are the details…)

The beginning of the year is as good a time as any to make some healthy changes in your life.  I work best on this sort of thing when I have support from others.  So I’ve decided to put together a challenge that everyone can participate in if they wish… one that will begin on Saturday, January 2nd and go on for 10 weeks (or more).  The event is called Ten in 10: Ten weeks to healthy in 2010.  Will you join me?
Ten in Ten470
Thanks to some wonderful Twitter friends who helped brainstorm logo ideas for this event @toontz  @GoodLifeEats @somethingshiny and @jenschall.  The logo we decided on was from @jenschall.  Thanks Jen!!

FAQ:

What is this all about?
It’s about wanting to feel healthy.  Everyone has a different vision of what being healthy means.  Some want to lose weight, some feel that they’re already at a comfortable weight but they would like to make a commitment to exercise, some would like to eat healthier, etc.  Everyone will have their own individual goals for this healthy challenge.

Who can participate?
Everyone…

If you’re a reader of my blog… plan to set your own goals, follow along with the posts, and comment if you wish with your own progress.  We can help motivate each other to do well.

If you’re on Twitter… we’re going to use the hashtag #10in10 to tweet updates.  Do a search for this hashtag if you’re looking to find others who are tweeting about the challenge.

If you have a blog… feel free to write about the challenge on your blog and encourage your readers to follow along with you.  You have permission to use the large graphic above, and here’s a badge that you can feature in your sidebar with a link to this post.

TenIn10_badge

When will I post updates about this challenge?
Today is just an introduction to the event that will begin on Saturday, Jan. 2nd.  I’ll plan to write a blog post with info, personal updates, motivational stories from readers, tips for recipes/exercise etc. on Saturdays only (beginning on Sat., Jan. 2nd).  Why Saturdays only?  Well, I maintain a food blog, and I don’t wish for my blog to become solely about diet and exercise.  Writing on Saturdays only will ensure that my regular readers will get the recipe posts that they’re expecting during the week and if they wish to follow along in the challenge they can visit on Saturdays too.  I’ll incorporate some healthy recipes into my blog posts, but mostly I’ll continue with the normal mix of things I usually write about.

How will we know who is participating?
I’ll be creating a page on my site that lists participants:   If you’d like to be added to the list, comment on this post with your information (you can include your name, blog url, twitter ID or whatever applies and if you have a general idea of what your goal will be w/ this challenge, let me know that too if you’d like) or email me all of that information at therecipegirl {at}gmail{dot}com.  Once we have a list going, I’ll add a link to the participant page on this post and you’re welcome to link to it too.

Why should you do this challenge with all these people?
SUPPORT!  Get-healthy challenges can be difficult to manage on your own.  With the support of your virtual friends, you’ll be encouraged to stay on track and keep motivated… let’s share our successes (and oopsies) together.  Share as much (or as little) as you want.

Why ten weeks?
@JenSchall came up with the idea of Ten in 10 via a brainstorming session on Twitter.  Everyone seemed to like the idea so we stuck with it.  When ten weeks are up, many may choose to extend the healthy challenge beyond ten weeks.  At ten weeks, we’ll “officially” congratulate those who stuck with it and plan to celebrate by sharing success stories.

What should you be doing between now and January 2nd to prepare for this challenge ?  You need to decide what this challenge is going to mean for you and set specific goals that are measurable.  Write down all of your goals.  If it’s in writing, you’re more likely to stick with it.  You might wish to take your measurements and/or take a “before” photograph.  Here are some things to consider…

1.  Do you want to lose weight?  If so, how do you plan to do it?  Do you have a specific number in mind?  Will you follow a Weight Watcher’s plan?  South Beach?  Low carb?  Cut down on sweets?  Is there a Biggest Loser competition you can join at work or at the gym?  Or will you just commit to eating a low fat diet?  Will you weigh in once a week?  The great thing about keeping our options open is that everyone is able to go about it using their own preferred method.  Create plan that you intend to follow for ten weeks.

2.  Do you wish to incorporate exercise into your life?  Maybe you’re not concerned about weight, but you’d like to lose inches… or gain muscle.  Decide what you’d like to do.  Do you belong to a gym?  Will you be committing to attending classes?  Will you work on the machines?  Will you lift weights?  Will you walk in your neighborhood?  Will you do the Couch to 5K program?  How many days a week will you exercise and for how long?  The best thing to do is create a plan that will work for you- one that you’ll be able to manage with your busy schedule.  Make an exercise calendar.  Keep track weekly what you’ve done to exercise.  Add up totals weekly, and you’ll motivated when you see your endurance and passion for exercise increase as the weeks go by.

3.  Do you need to banish comfort food from your life and eat more healthfully?  How will you do it?  Will you be on a diet plan where meals are laid out for you?  Will you be eating more whole grains?  Will you be cutting out/cutting down on sweets?  Will you vow to cut out alcohol or soda?  Will you allow yourself an indulgent day once or twice a week?  Will you make a commitment to eat more vegetables and fruits?  Or do you just wish to create a healthy balance between baking – salads- wine- carbs, etc?  Decide on a realistic plan of what is going to work for you- what you think you can stick with for the whole ten weeks.

4.  What else do you want to do to get a healthy start to the New Year?  Do you need to stop smoking?  Get more sleep?  Drink more water?  Gain weight?  Eat a more balanced diet?  Cut out artificial sweeteners?  Give up beer?  Eliminate nighttime snacking?

5.  Consider getting your family involved in the challenge too!  Each family member can set their own goals for getting healthy in the New Year.  It can be a great lesson for your kids to learn about what it means to make healthy food choices and live an active life.

6.  What’s your motivation?  Do you have a special event coming up soon… a wedding, a class reunion, a family re-union, a trip?  Do you have health issues that can be alleviated by living a healthier life?  Do you want to have more energy to play with your kids or your grandkids?  Do you want to fit into the clothes in the back of your closet?  Are you more likely to don a bathing suit next summer if you’re more fit?  Or do you just feel like you’ve been overindulging and you want to feel better about yourself?

7.  Set up a reward for yourself at the end of your challenge:  Maybe you’d like to go shopping?  Maybe you’d like to buy something you’ve been wanting for a long time?  Maybe you’d like to donate $/per pound that you’ve lost to your local food bank?

You may find that the changes you decide to make will end up becoming lifestyle changes- creating a healthy, new you!

Some have suggested www.SparkPeople.com as a way to keep track of your progress.  I have set up a Spark Group for us here if you’d like to join in.  Use this url to add yourself to the team (it’s free).
http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/groups_individual.asp?gid=38209&gcode=3USP1YE3BF
I’m still learning about this website, but you can use it to track fitness, food, etc.    We might as well join and give it a shot (but that’s up to you, of course).

So that’s the plan!  Please let me know if you’d like to participate- all are welcome- join in at the beginning or any time throughout the 10 weeks.  I’m happy to listen to suggestions for other things to incorporate into our event.  If you have things to share, websites to refer us to, expertise in this area… by all means comment below or email me.  Although I’ve been on nearly every diet plan known to mankind at one time or another, I’m definitely not an expert…. just a girl who loves recipes & food who is always trying to find a healthy balance :)

Final note:  If you wish to be included in the list of participants, please email the following information to therecipegirl {at} gmail {dot} com w/ the subject heading “Ten in 10″: geographic location, name, blog url, twitter ID or whatever applies & if you have a general idea of what your goal will be w/ this challenge that would be good too.

*Here is the link to who is participating in the challenge.

I’m in – I was already planning to do a kind of “New Years Resolution” month of recipes in January, so this will fit right in with that. My goals are to get back to healthier habits – eating with more restraint through most of the week and getting daily exercise. Looking forward to it!

I have Type 2 Diabetes, but I am right at what they used to call Adult Onset Diabetes, meaning I teeter on the brink of having it and not having it. That’s a good thing and a bad thing. It’s good, because it gave me a wake up call and reminded me to be healthier. It’s bad because I often feel like I am not that bad and don’t need to worry about it, when I really know that I do! My goal is to incorporate at least one walk around my neighborhood everyday. I work like crazy, so I often use that as an excuse, so I really want to try and get out of that rut. If I lose some weight in the process, great, if not, that’s fine too. I also want to focus on getting more veggies in my diet.

    My goals:

I’m going to restart the Couch to 5k program, which I tried about a year and a half ago but only made it halfway through. My mom is a big runner, so I will be running with her for the first couple of weeks while I’m visiting my parents. Overall, my fitness goal is to do 30 minutes of exercise per day (probably jogging 3x per week and exercise videos, strength training, or swimming on other days).

I also have a goal to increase fruits and vegetables in my diet. I’m pretty erratic with this, particularly when I’m at school, even though I love fruits and veggies and know they’re important. My goal is to be more conscious, shop smarter, and aim for 5 per day.

My goals right now are to get moving and to get healthier. I’m going to be 42 soon and I would like to shed some weight to feel more confident in myself and in my health. I want to be a healthy and energetic mom for my two young boys.

Definitely going to be keeping a food journal, as I find that really helps me. And I think I’m going to have cut way back on my baking…cookies are a weakness.

    Thanks so much!

    Lori,

Great idea! I’m going to be focusing on health-related issues on my blog as well. I’m a nutritionist/exercise physiologist and have been eating way too many sweets and treats this holiday season. Ugh! Time to get back on the clean eating bandwagon. I’ll connect with you and tweet about your event when I post something new.

Peace, love and lots of healthy changes in 2010!

    I am definitely in!
My husband and I just got married and most definitely put on the requisite 20 lbs of being in love and eating long indulgent meals and giving up exercise time for couch and cuddling time!
Our goal is to work out at least 20-30 minutes a day of cardio (we do own a treadmill collecting dust!), to take our dogs out for more long walks, and to eat more mindfully instead of in front of the TV!
    Thanks for the inspiration

Even though I have a baking blog, I really need to cut back on the amount of sugar I’ve been eating. I did a 5-day detox a few weeks ago and it was great, but I need a real program to get me back on track so I can stick with it! Not ban sugar all the time, just limit it to a healthy amount – a small treat once a week, occasionally twice. This is the perfect opportunity! Looking forward to being part of this great community and hearing about everyone’s progress!

    I’m in. My goals:
    1. Drink at least 8 glasses of water. Every. Single. Day.
    2. Get in bed by 10 p.m. one night per week. If I’m not ready to go to sleep, I can read, but that’s it. No computer, no TV, no radio. Sleep or read.

If I can just do those two things, I bet the rest of the goals are going to fall into place that much more easily…

I am SOOO impressed with the effort that you have put into this GREAT idea. There’s nothing like support and group mentality to help committments like creating a healthier lifestyle come true. THANK YOU. And…..COUNT ME IN. I plan on actually DOING the yoga that I love so well but have ignored lately AND walking daily with my walking buddies (husband and 2 goldens) AND portion control spread out in 3-4 smaller meals a day (no skipping meals anymore – I promise) OK. Now I made it real. Bring it on 10 in 10!!! I’m psyched.

More importantly, for health reasons, my husband has to loose a total of 40 pounds, but the realistic goal is 15 pounds by April 1. Hello! I would like to join the challenge! I have already registered with the group on SparkPeople. Can’t wait to get started! My goals are to lose weight and build muscle tone, and I intend to reach these goals by eating less, eating healthier and starting to exercise (I do absolutely NO excercise now…yikes!). I would like to lose 20 pounds… that would put me at a VERY healthy weight, and I would weigh what I did when I graduated high school! :) I’m not expecting to lose all 20 withing the 10 week challenge, but I’d like to get a good head start!

Thanks for inspifing me to get off my butt.

    Hello :)

I’ve just read about this challenge on Jenn’s (aka the Leftover Queen)blog, and came here to read about the details.

I would love to participate. Though my primary goal is to have daily excercise. Simple: walking daily… and maybe some more to have stronger muscles.

I’m already trying to keep a healthy nourishing program. More Mediterranean (from where I am) and less bad fats! But the area I live now is not suitable for walking as an excercise. (The very center of Istanbul! All high towers w/out parks or coast!)

Fortunatelly I’ll move back to my hometown of Istanbul (to Bostanci) where there is a very long coast (more than 25 km.s!) to walk as I like in two or three months.

So when the move is finished I may start my own 10 week challange myself :)

Till that time I’ll keep an eye on here :)

    Thanks & Cheers from Istanbul!

We “met” on Twitter the other day {ddh77} – a group of my Twitter friends and I have committed to getting healthy in 2010. We are trying to maintain a minimum of two-to-one protein/carb ratio and exercising more. Some are doing yoga, some exercise equipment, some walk/running. We are hoping to meet up in New York City next fall, so we all have good motivation. For myself, I feel it is more of the mindset to improve my lifestyle overall, rather than “go on a diet.” I will be following your Ten in 2010, too. I need all of the inspiration, tips and suggestions that I can get. Thanks for putting together this challenge. Good luck to us all! :D

I have lost about 10 inches in the past year but have stalled a bit.
